storage stock, carefully candled. Is to-
day being offered by Front street hand
lers from 26 to tlhie a dosen and
there are reports that some stock con,
' sldered first class has been roovd
within the last few days as low as 15c.
Those who have figured on still fur-
. tner hftinr of egr values are now fig
uring upon how to unload with most
safety. The whole proposition Is that
the eastern egg sellers have handed the
local people a gold brick, carefully
gilded with fictitious: local values.
Some assert that the gold brick was
really heated and this is the reason
why some-: of the handlers of eastern
stock her are so anxious to let go
!. k n1lA delay.
-The sharp decline In the price of
asters eggs locally has had a weak
' enlng effect upon local product. Ore
rorv eggs are coming slightly faster and
the.trailasrhlch was talking of nothing
lower than 40c for ranch stock, is now
quite willing to let go at S8c and even
37 He is not refused when there are any
signs that the dealer will not buy at a
higher figure.
Hew Oranges Bus Tomorrow.
" The first new navel oranges of the

Tine Apples from The Danes.
There never was a better grade- of ap
' pies in tnls market than is shown in
' present arrivals of Spltsenbergs from
The Dalles shippers. Among the ene
cially mentioned shippers la C. L. Hl
' sen. Thse apples are of unusually
deep color and attract much attention
. , from the-, trade. They are prices around
2 60 box. There la a scarcity of
, best Hood River stock in the market at
the moment. Fancy Hood Rivers are
-.selling around 12.60 a box, while choice
. stock ranges 60c lower. The principal
arrivals from there at this tlm con--slsta
of seconds which finds a fair sale
around SI. 60 a box. ...
rotato Market Is Tery Steady.
'. There Is a very' steady tone -In the
: local potato situation at this time.
While talking of the fine quality of the
.California product and the unusually
poor stuff produced here this season,
, ' California buyers who have lately paid
4 visits -to this section, - have purchased
quite liberally for future requirements.
-"There seems little doubt that the Cali
fornia river districts will be able to
supply that section as well as other
--.nearby localities with potatoes for sev
eral months, but after awhile the sup-
piles there will be exhausted. . The gen
eral opinion of the local trade is that
producers should unload at this time
- anything that is not fancy.
Brief Votes of Front Street.
' f Taney veal Is rather scarce and prices
are stiff around 8o for select. Hogs
continue weak with 7c for best stock.
Chicken market is just about holding
Its own with cleanups reported by the
. trade at lio a pound.
There Is scarcely any demand for
chlttfm 'bark at this time, dealers not
offering; over 6c and they are not anx
ious to buy at that figure. It is an
election market
Concord grapes are still In an over-
- supply from local yards and most sales
are being made around 10 tnd 12 Ho a
.basket
Local grower are still holding back
their onions and for this reason there la
. again some talk of bringing in supplies

Portland Unfon Stockyards, Nov. 2.
Continuance of heavy arrivals of hogs
in the yards and the shyness of buyers
owing to the approaching election, has
caused a drop of lOcfo 16c In the price
of best hogs today, as compared with
previous prices. While the weakness
is believed to be merely temporary and
caused to some extent by the decline in
prices during the past few days at east
ern points, receivers were not Inclined
to carry over anything' that could pos
sibly be sold even at sacrificed quota
tion.
Heceivers are all or the opinion that
the market will do better after election.
for at this time packers and killers are
not inciinea to ouy more man they
need for Immediate requirements. East-1
ern price loasas are somewhat of a sur
prise, but were probably - due to the
same reasons as here.
. Cattle Market Xs Slow.
The entire cattle market was slow
for the day, killers 'showing not the
slightest . inclination to do business.
While receivers seemed willing to shade
pcJces a fraction or two in-order to
clean up, buyers could not be induced
to get active. The few sales that were
made were of small moment. r
-Sheep .market is not inclined to show
much activity, although arrivals for the
day were somewhat heavier than ex
pected. J
Today 52 head of goats were among
the arrivals In the yards.
Today's rurt of livestock compares
with arrivals sfi this day in recent
years as follows:"
