' The success of the pay-as-you-enter
system has been so great elsewhere
that there has been a natural desire
on the part of officials over all the,
country to convert oia cars into pay-as-you-enter
affairs. This will proba
bly be done In Portland as the people be
come accustomed to the new system. The
new cars for Portland are much the aame
as those In use 'In Chicago and other
eastern cities where they - have been
found . to work successfully In every
way, not only for ' the streetcar com
panies, but for "the convenience of the
traveling public as well. .
with cars of this style, all th con
ductor has to do is to stand on the rear
platform, make change and see that the
passengers drop their fares Into the
cash boxes. He Is not compelled to go
tnrougn the cars to collect - rares. ana
owing to this fact he will have muoh
more time to look after tha wants of
ssengers, and to attend to those get-
ng off and on. The comoany officials
believe that the number of accidents
will be reduced and that faster time can
be made by- the cars with tbe new style
platform. '
