. HOMES BEING BUILT
Good

; ; HistoryTen Dwellings Completed Each Day Is
; : Average for Months Past.
A careful review of the local build
. ing aftuatlon brings to light the fact
that the number of new homes under
construction la greater by far than a
any time previous In the history, of
Portland. . While the real eUte brok
era and operators are enjoying more
. prosperity than at any tliae alnce the
drat of the year, there la no denying
the fact that building operations, espe
cially of new homes, have a long lead
over the real estate bualness.
; Just how many new homes are going
: up In Portland and suburbs It would "be
. difficult to estimate, but that they are
; lesion can be demonstrated by a short
car nue in ur uiitouvu w uwuni
Just completed or under construction,
are to be seen everywhere, and the
sound of the carpenter's saw and ham-
mer is beard in every cua-rici. n jmou
It is doubtful If there Is a street in
Portland on which a new house le not
going up, while on most streets they
ran be numbered by the score, snd
there seems to bs no and to the bulld
Inff astlvltv. - .
The dally average of new dwellings
completed has not been less than 10
for months past, while for October, as
. indicated ty. tne numoer 01 permiia is
sued, the number of newly completed
: residences wUl be nearer IS for every
, work day In the month. These figures
" refer fb building operations Inside the
.-city limits, and take no account of the
extensive ouuaing in prugreaa iu
Mount Scott district, nor In ths terri
tory on the lower Peninsula, including
St. Johns and the packing-house dis-
ConAdens of the Tutors.
The - impression strongly prevails
among Ml classes that Portland is des
tined to be a great, big city; that it will
in a few years spread over all the ter
ritory now served by the lines of the
street railway company, and that no
mistake , can be made IS buying and
building anywhere between Lents and ,
fit. Johns, ana council vjreisi ana me
eastern confines of the Montavllla and
Rose City Park districts.
During the first 20 business days of
October 300 building" permits were Is
sued, calling for an expendituro of
$900,000. , If the same record is kept up
for the remainder of the montn. permits
to the value of nearly fl.600,000 will
he Issued, which will easily outdistance
any other month of the year and ,wlll
be more than double the- total of Oc
tober, 1907j ' .
A surprising feature of the reoent
building development is the largs num
ber of residences that are being erected
without the necessity of the owners
borrowing any part of the money used
in the construction. One of the largest
- operators in Portland suburban prop
erty made the statement that, while
more -houses are going up In additions
controlled by him than for months past,
he has received fewer applications for
bullriin ' loans. sThe dally record or

The Difference Between a
Patented Article and an Ar
ticle Controlled By a Trust
. Following I is i an extract from William Jennings
Bryan's recent speech before the Nebraska university,
in which Mr. Bryan repudiates the insinuation by Gov
ernor Hughes that he (Bryan) would consider a pat
ent a monopoly which shoiildbe abolished: ' ' ' '
"He takes the case of a patent and says that our
plan would interfere with patents. What is Mr.
Hughes trying to do? '. Is he deceived himself, or is he
simply trying to deceive those who listen to him? Our
anti-trust plank has nothing to do with patents. The
patent is intended to be a monopoly, land our reference
to patents in another part of the platform is sufficient
proof that the convention had no intention of includ
ing the patent in the operation of an anti-trust law.
I explained this soma weeks ago when the objection
was first made, but -the objection was so silly that I
did cot suppose that it would be made by anyone with
any sense of responsibility. " Does Mr. Hughes really
think that our anti-trust plank was intended to apply
to a patent, or is he so hard pressed for arguments that
he must use that argument anyhow? - A patent grants .
a monopoly for a limited time as a reward for an in
vention. The trusts that we are opposed to have not
invented anything, and they acknowledge no limit as
to time. The trusts attempt to corner the market, and .
it is cot only against the statute law, but it is an of
fense against the common law and an offense against
morals, and Mr. Hughes cannot be so obtuse as not to
understand the distinction between the trust that we
are fighting and a business that is protected by a
patent." .
