IODINE FOR MEDICINE
(Special Dispatch tot The Journal.) !
Unlverstty of Oregon, Eugene. Oct. 23.
'Bill" Hay ward, who has so success
fully trained the university athletes for
several years, accidentally swallowed
aome iodine yesterday, fortunately with
out serious results. One of the football
men had been using the Iodine on a
bruised lee- and. when through, he laid
it on a shelf with several other bottles.

later to take some cough medicine he

(United Press Latere Wit.)
New York, Oct 33. A score of racing
automobiles, guided by the best drivers
of America and Europe, will compete
tomorrow In tbe fourth competition for
tha silver trophy given by William K.
Vanderbllt Jr.. known aa the Vanderbllt
cup. The first oar, a Locomobile, will
be sent away from the starting line at
tha grand stand located on tha new
motor parkway not far from the
village of Central Park and several miles
east ' of Garden City and Mineola as
soon as practicable after dawn, and the
other cars will follow at half-minute
intervals. They will make 11 circuits
of the new cup course of 23. B miles, and
the driver covering the 2S8.5 miles In
the shortest time will be awarded the
trophy.
Interest Oreat Abroad.
As an International automobile speed
contest the Vanderbllt cup race holds
first place amon similar events the
world over, and automobiltsts, not alone
throughout America, but across the
water, will earerly await the decision
which Is likely to be known about noon
tomorrow, Amdng the drlvera there are
so many skilful, fearless and experi
enced men with cara of known power
and speed, that It is useless to attempt
to predict the winner.
The cars entered in the race embrace
two Locomobiles, two Knox, three Mer
cedes, one Chadwlck, one Isotta, two
Matheson, one Iiotchklss, one Brazier,
one B. L. M. and one Renault. Num
bered among the well-known drivers who
will be seen In the great contest are
Strang, RobertBon, Basle, Haupt, Lytle,
Kyall. rouget, salzman. Chevrolet,
Bourque and Foxhall Keene, the millionaire.
With a fair day It Is claimed that
speed, hitherto unheard of in this coun
try, will be made by the competitors.
In practice the racing machines have
made some marvelous speed over the
new course, and It is believed that in
the event tomorrow the winner will
have to maintain a speed of better than
mile a minute. This means that the
cars will shoot along straight and level
stretches of road at 90 miles an hour.

there are eight, a speed of 60 miles an

era would preserve their Uvea and their
machines to tha end of the race.
Better and Taster.
The racing circuit this year is a little
more isolated than those which ha,ve
been used in the three previous races.
It is in the form of an irregular tri
angle surrounding the village of Hlcka
ville, with the Jericho turnpike on the
north and the new motor parkway on
the south. The start and finish will
be on the motor parkway several miles
east of Mineola and Garden City, the
latter place being the headauarters of
the Vanderbllt cup . commission. . The
country In which the circuit is located
Is generally level, there belne a remark
able absence of hills even for Lone
Island.
The 11 miles of the motor parkway is
practically level, and from the grand
stand there Is an extended view of the
cement parkway part f the course. The
grandstand Is a permanent affair of
steel, 10 times as Urge as the stands at
former races. All of the parkway Is
fenced with strong steel wire fenelna-
and parking spaces for cars have been
assigned along this stretch.

University of Oregon, Eugene, Oct 23.
There will bo three games today and
tomorrow in which university teams will
participate, the Freshman-Kugene High
this-afternoon, the Oregon-Willamette
game here tomorrow and tne second 'var-sity-Cbemawa
game at Chemawa tomor
row. .
Th freshman team is In excellent
shapefand as several of tbelr men who
have been playing with the 'varsity will
be playing with them, 'should have no
difficulty In rolling up a good score.
Eugene, however, has a good team and
as they have been practicing hard this
week, may surprise tne iresnmen.
The 'varsity team is not in the best
condition for the Willamette game as a
number of the men have been bruised
up considerably in tha stiff scrimmage
practice.
Coach Forbes has been putting them
through the past week. Several of the
freshmen will also be in the game with
Eugene High today : and It is hard to
tell what condition they will be In to
morrow. Everybody Is confident tha
Ores-on will be victorious.
The result of the game between th
second 'varsity is looked forward to wit
a great deal of Interest as tha Chemawa
team Is an unknown quantity. The sec
ond team is exceptionally strong this
year, as practically an or last year
men are back In the tama and some ex
cellent new material has turned out
Several of Its members are showing
varsity form and may be added to the
varsity squad Derore lone, jn scrim
mage during the past week they have
several times piavea tne 'varsity to
standstill.
Earl Hauey or Baker City was elect
ei captain of the second 'varsity, last
night by a unanimous vote. This Is his
third year on the second eleven and he
is playing an excellent game- at half.
ASTORIA AND ACADEMY

1 1 .. A
Portland academy will meet Astoria
high school on Multnomah field 'Mon
day afternoon. This is the first Jime In
years that an Astoria team has been
seen In Portland and a good crowd is
expected. A return game will be played
later.
When academy goes Onto the field
Monday her team will be hardly recog
nized as the same one which was so
easily defeated by East Side hlsrh school
last Wednesday. The' tackles" and backs
win probably be tne' onlyvmen the
same. Cobb will be at quarter, Beuhner
and curry at ends, Leonard at center.
Bummers at guard and possibly a new
man at the other, guard position. Bueh-
ner's work, in judgment at least, was
very poor In Wednesday's game and It
Is hoped by the coaches that bv the
vigorous shaking up given the team a
winning combination can be secured.
Leonard played center last vear and it
was only owing to a sore arm that he
was not the regular center. Curry and
