Mr. Bagnall says that while the wind
"was very high at times, the Jetty, even
to its farthest point more than six
. miles from the mainland, stood the
' wind and sea as solidly as the rock
of Gibraltar. Not a boulder was dis
gorged so far is it haa been ppssible
to ascertain. But la la expected that tho

of work for the winter. In the mean
. time from 8,800 to 3,600 tons of rock
are being dumped onto the Jetty every

Steel Steamer H. B. Kennedy Nearly
Ready for Plunge.
Preparations are being made at the
Willamette Iron & Steel Works for
the forthcoming launching of the steam
er H. B. Kennedy, which Is being built
at the large Dlant ln North Portland.
The steel hull will be released from the
ways during the first week of next
month and the launching ways are now
Deing put in.
The H. B. Kennedy is a s,teel boat
190 feet long and Is to operate on
Puget sound, the contract calling for
completion or tne crart oy tn nrst
of the year. Those In charge of the
work say this can easily be done as
the work is well under way. The hull
Is practically completed and the mach
inery win De reaay tor installation im
mediately upon the launching.
Work on the construction of two ar
tillery boats also to ply on Puget
sound for the government will be begun
as soon aa the Kennedy Is off the ways.

Hood River, Or., Oct 17. The last
day of the Hood River fruit fair shows
no diminution ln the Interest and en
thusiasm of growers and visitors. Th
big apple display is being visited by
hundreQs from the valley and county,
and also by a large crowd from Port
land and The Dalles. The fair mana
gers announced today that th exhibits
would be kept Intact until Sunday after
noon at n:30 in order to give many busi
ness men an opportunity to see the ap
ples today. The fair today is being
viewed by several hundred school chil
dren, as well as many other visitors.
The Judges are still trying to decide
who is entitled to -the premiums. After
working all day yesterday and also to
day they are still unable to decide on
the prizes for some of tho varieties.
Other events ln addition to the apple
show today are a rootDail game between
the hisrh school team and The Dalles,
and a banquet, which will b given .to
night at the Mount Hood hotel by the
newly formed University club. With
the additional members secured during
tne last two days, tne ciud now numDers
85, and covers will be laid tonight for
100.

William E. Annls, advertising manager
of the Burr-Mclntosh monthly, at the
Bayslde Yacht club, at Bayaide, L. I.,
