TIES ARE BURNED BECAUSE
THEY CAN'T BE GIVEN AWAY
Millions of old Ues are burned every
year along the right of ways of the
railroad companies, or all told perhaps
enough wood to supply half of Portland
with fuel for an entire winter. Persons
when traveling notice the ties burning
beside the track, and are always won
dering why In the world the railroad
companies da not sell the wood or util
ise it in some other war.
"If the officials decided to sell the
wood, these old ties and bridge Umbers,
that would 'open up opportunity for
graft with every section boss along the
entire line," said a railroad man this
morning, "and realising this fact the
companies have never sold their old
ties.
They have tried giving them away.
This also was a failure, strange ss It
may seem. It has been tried hundreds
of times and In most cases was a fail
ure. When a farmer ia given the old
ties he promisee to remove them from
the right of wsv at once. In time, how
ever, he usually picks out the best
