of this city, of which Arm Herman
Klaber of Tacoma Is the head, has
added much fuel to the tight In the hop
market and started a war for supremacy
of the hop trade that la now involving
two of the larger tlrins In the business
and inay perhaps force the general trade
iato the light. It has been a matter or
common knowledge for some time that
. the firms of Isaac Plncus ft Bona of Ta
.eoraa and Herman Klaber have been try
ing to force each other out of the hop
ttradu. While Plncua haa had the lead
of the trade for some yesrs, Klaber has
. been mending his "fences" and the re
sult Is that he now controls several
large hop firms waiting for battle with
Messrs. Plncus A Sons. While In some
quarters In fact In most quarters of
. the bop trade It Is generally believed
' that 'the so-called enormous purchases
of Saturday by Klaber were merely the
taking In of contracts made early In the

could deliver on his short sales. Quite

been buyers for the Plncus account in
former seasons. This may mean that

straights; for hops as .the Klaber peo
ple believe. In any event the hop mar
ket Is .much firmer than last Friday and

t ton to let go at the higher range of
values now -oeing quoted.
i BntUr Market Is Advanced.
There was an advance of 2c a pound
, In the price--of best creamery butter
here this morning. While some maker
did not advance their values early in
the day, almost evry one did so later
. because each-must pay the higher price
for cream. Best local creamery butter
stands at 36e a pound today and the
.. market Is Arm at that figure. Supplies
. of fancy quality are limited and the
trade anticipates no trouble in main
taining values.

Local ranch eggs are very scarce tn
the Front street markets. Supplies In
dicate that the country is holding them
for a higher range of values, a large
portion of the arrivals of late not
showing first, class quality and were
- therefore unable to bring top quotations.
There Is a continuation of a very
weak and dull tone in the poultry mar
ket All lines are now affected by the
weakness, trade In ducks and turkeys
, feeling the effects of. the -glut in
chickens. While a short time ago the
trade found no -difficulty at all in dis
poning of all turkey arrivals at 18c,
trade will not take them at that figure.
Week's market depends upon the extent
of the arrivals but none anticipate a
r very heavy demand.
Potatoes Are Bather Stoaxy.
A rather steady tone Is noted In the
local potato' market just now. Offerings
of producers are rather light and out
side markets are not disposed to pay
high price Some of the present busi
ness Is fo speculative purposes, this
indicating chat the trade itself is of the
opinion that the market will do better
-later in ' the season.

Reports from the Interior state that
seed In it operations In the grain belts
nr not half of what thev were a year
ago, and present Indications are for a
smaller total output or lau-sown man
for the 1907 planting. The ground haa
been too dry for successful work In
many places, but where the rains have
been ordinarily liberal the operations
are heavier. This Is due to thw unusu
ally good prices. Reports Indicate that
the barley and oats acreage will show
the heaviest increase ints season.

Hog Tractlonally Weaker.
There la a fractionally weaker tone in
the hoc market although sales were
still beV.ig made today as high as 17.
Very little toD stuff is coming and a
large"per cent of the sales are around
16.60 or 16.75. Feed stuff la finding
aome little call around 16 and 15.50. Ar
rivals In Hie hog msrket over Sunday
consisted of 106 nesd compared with

Chehalls, Wash., Oct. 12. Weather
conditions in Lewis county the past
summer and fall have been different al
together from any that have obtained
before in the memory of the oldest in
habitant. Krom June up to the present
time tnere nas been scarcely any rain,
with the result that nearly all the pas
turage has been burnt up and growing
crops have suffered greatly. Early
frosts in September killed much of the
late crops, ' especially nipping the late
planted potatoes, which will make the
price on that article high this winter.
Milk tins gone up to $1.60, the highest
price ever paid nere, and butter Is soar
ing out of sight.

What the Dealers Bay.
Mr. Benson of Benson A Gould saya:
"The hog market la somewhat weak at
the moment although there Is no doubt
that $7 could still be obtained for best
stuff. There is a fine call for fat cows,
but" steers are slightly neglected."
Lee M. Lacy of Hunt Lacy: "The
livestock situation remains about the
same as last week. Hogs (hat Is good,
fat stuff would still bring $7. and se
lect steers will likely continue at
$4.26."
A year ago todav hogs were weak;
cattle and sheep firm. No change in
values for the day.
Today 60 horses arrived in the yards.

Annual American Royal Livestock show

Oregon City, Oct. 12. Andrew Todd,
one of the most prominent citlxens of
the southern part of this county, was
accidentally killed Saturday on Elliott
Prairie.
Mr. Todd was riding on a load of
straw, when the front staff of the rack
snapped, throwing the front end of the
load down under the horses' feet. Todd
