had tired of the show business, and find
ing that it was a beautiful afternoon he
had broken loose from his cage, and had

Work on the survey of a line to con
nect the North Bank and Great North
ern roads by way of the Columbia river
haa been begun by a party of Hill en
gineers, and the line will not only head
off a projected Milwaukee branch
through Douglas county, Wash., but
will ' bring the vast wheat crop of
Douglas and Benton counties down the
water grade to Portland.
The route of the proposed line begins
at nennewicK. on tne Mortn Hantc mam
line between SDOkane and Portland, fol
lows the west Dank of the Columbia to
Priest Rapids, where it crosses the river
and follows the east bank of the Co
lumbia to Trinidad on the transconti
nental line of the Great Northern. - At
Trinidad the proposed line will connect
with a route already surveyed by Oreaj
Northern engineers to connect Trinidad

tentiary, Edgar Barton is in the county
Jail here awaiting the arrival of a pris
on guard.
When Barton was convicted of man
slaughter several . months ago. he sub
mitted his caae to the court of crim
inal appeals. He waa released from
custody pending a decision and went
out to a ranch on the border of New
