Naw Tork. Oct Tha college foot
ball season la fairly at hand and tha
number of games scheduled for each
Saturday and Wednesday afternoon Is
steadily, growing. -All tha big teams'
have been In aotlon and soon It will
ba time to alaa up tha various team.
Tale Is trying her beat to develop a
quarterback o take-the place of Tad
Jones, regarded by many aa the greatest
quarter of the decade. Ills splendid
playing abilities will not be missed
mora than his ability aa a gridiron
strategist.
It now looks as If tha man to take
Jones' place would ba Hopkins, who
was quarter on the freshman team last
rear. Hopkins la very light and wiry,
ta runa punts after the style of
Jones, and like htm never loses his
head. His dodging on the 10-yard line,
followed by a clever forward pass, won
tha game from the Harvard freshmen
laat year. (
Hopkine Is In fine condition. Against
him for the quarterback position Is II.
P. . Bingham, who used to Quarter at
Taft, and who two yeara ago generalled
tha Tale freshman team. If Hopkins
proves too light, probably J. R. Kll-
patrlck, formerly an Andover halfback,
win do asKea to try ror ouarter. ai
though he Is now playing with the half
backs.
All the vnrnltv nla.vers of last venr
who did not graduate are bark, with the
exception of Arthur E. Bridges, of
Brockton. He will probably go back
on tha line thla year.
One of Prlnceon's strong points
ways has been punting. This year
Coach Roper Is complaining that he
has no one yet who shows definite
signs of maintaining Princeton's fame
In the punting line.
Several men were tried out. but no
really good work was done. The two
best kickers have graduated. Tibbot,
McCroahan and Reed seem at present
to be the best, and It ought to be
possible to develop a good punter from
one or mem.
Pennsylvania coaches are happy over
the possibility that Gallagher, the vet
eran guard, may succeed in arranging a
post-graduate course in the rlental cie-
fartment and return this fall. Paux
ia. too. expects a hearing on his case
and If favorable he will return to play
at one of the ends. Pennsylvania has
arranged a game with Garnegie Tech.
at Pittsburg for Octover 31, the date
given Bwarthmore before the latter de
cided to give up football.
