Wliat President Roosevelt, over his
own signature, termed "the very best
play I have ever seen," "The Man of
the Hour" will be acted at the Heilli
theatra, - Fourteenth and Washing-ton
treeta, including- a Saturday matinee,
beginning- Thursday night, October S,
rhere Its success a year ago was so
strong and sure that the management
had all arrangements made for the re
turn, in the spring, of the special com
pany which William A. Brady and
Joseph - R. ' Grismer had organised for
the presentation - of George H. Broad
hurst's uncommon piece in this neigh
borhood. But, 'mean while, a second Chi-'
rago run had bees called upon by the
Chicago company, and the route of large
cities of the middle west that had been
assigned to that company was turned
over to the Pacific coast cast, so that
contracts might be kept. This of
course was done After due negotiations

prived of the expected pleasure to be
derived from another engagement of the

of remarkable interest and power, the
scenery and stage settings form no
small part of the drawing qualities of
"The Olrl of the Golden West." The
Baker stock company's production is In
as exact duplicate of the original as
presented by Blanche Bates as possible.
This is Portland's first opportunity to
see the great play the newspapers have
talked about all over the country foe
the past two seasons, and the way
theatre-goers have taken advantage of

the source of much gratification for
Manager Baker and his most excellent
company. Ixetta Jewel has done won
ders with the role of "the girl- and it
