JIajor Says Thompson Im

Names Three Testers.
Th result of Mayor Lane' curb tap
ping expedition became evident at the
meeting of the executive board yeater
dfty afternoon when a letter from the
; mayor was received informing the board
; that the curbing on Thompson atreet
between East Seventh and East Four
teenth waa defectlv and that he did not
care to assume responsibility for It by
signing th warrants with which to pay
tne contractors.
Seneca Smith. Isaac Swctt and P. E.
. Sullivan were, appointed ft committee to
investigate other street and report in
ft week a to their condition. If the
contractors are found to be at fault
th board will tn all probability Irfslat
on tne reconstruction or an euro not
found to be in accordance with the spec
lricatlons. The mayor letter rollowa
"To the Honorable Executive Board-
Gentlemen: I herewith aubmit for your
consideration the report of the street
commute upon the acceptance of
Thompson street from Seventh to Four
teenth atreeta.
"My attention having been called to
the character -of the work which haa
been done upon the artificial curb upon
one aide or this street, I nave, u
examination, flpund It to be of ucl
nature that r do not care to assume
the responsibility of signing warrants
for the payment of th same. -
"Either the specifications for the con
struction ' of artificial stone curbs Is
defective or the method of Inspection
in use by this city is faulty, for the
curbs of many street are defective and
the property owners, who pay for the
same, are not receiving a just value
for the expenditure which they make
for euch improvements.
"If the contractors are at fault they
should be made to replace this curb in
all places where it Is defective. If the
city Is to blame It should either alter
its specifications or replace the curb
where necessary.
"I respectfully call your attention to
thla matter for the reaaon that I be
lieve that a change for the better la
much needed and ahould be inaugurated.
Respectfully,
"HARRY LANE. Mayor."
