ure to comprehand the fullness of
what last week's livestock show

public activity that bas been under
taken in Portland since the great
jLewis and Clark exposition has prom
ised so much of benefit to Portland,
to ' Oregon and to the northwest.
Trans-Mississippi congress that meets
in San Fjrancisco next month, will
wield an influence in a similar direc
tion. The irrigation congress is also
doing its jrood work, as are an in
creasing number of other organizations.
Not the least important of these
congresses is the tuberculosis con
gress, to meet this week in Wash
ington, D. C Such a congress means
that an organized, persistent, scien
tific warfare is being carried on
against that hitherto greatest scourge
of the human race, that Dr. Oliver
Wendell Holmes called the "White
Plague of the North." This disease,
it has been asserted, has killed one
