American inanstr.es. in is is un
doubtedly true, although several
hundreds of thousands of cars have
. been idle during the past few
months. They will all be needed,
and more, in the near future. Mr.
J. J. Hill keeps repeating that the
country needs $6,500,000,000 worth
of more railroads and railroad equip
ment In the next five years. Mr.
Harriman admits that he must ex
pend hundreds of millions In extend
ing and expanding his systems. The
Pennsylvania railroad has spent sev
eral hundred millions within a short
time, and mast spend a good deal
more. So with other great systems.
Here la the Pacific Northwest
both Mr. Hill and Mr. Harriman are
getting exceptionally busy. They
realise that the country needs many
more miles of railroad and a great
deal more equipment and facilities,
and they will have to be supplied.
Tbe peopl will ultimately "pay the
freight. and they are bound to get
tbe roads. And they are going to
get a lot of local electric lines too,
whether Mr. Hill and Mr. Harriman
build them or not.
WO THINGS are of more In
portance to thq country people
t and to all of us than any
passing phase of politics, the
success of one party rather than an
other. These are: Better Cultiva
tion of soil; and Better Roads
The people of Oregon are impror-
Ing in these matters year by year,
but there Is need of greater, more
rapid and more intelligent Improve
ment.
In a good many Instances a man
can raise $1,000 worth of stuff per
acre, or even more, on a small tract
of land. In far more numerous
cases he can raise $100 an acre.
This can be done on hundreds of
tnousanas or acres oi uregon sou.
And then on millions of other acres
the returns will amount to $50, $40,
$30 or $25 an acre. If the best cul
tivation is done enough to make
families cheerful and thankful that
the lines have fallen to them tn
pleasant places.
Now thousands of people should
be striving, not spasmodically and
feverishly, but steadily, thoughtfully,

ENATOR FORAKER scarcely re- Uculara

on Investigation It was recalled
to his memory that he had con
sented to help a man, apparently a
stranger, t6 get control of a news
paper In Columbus, the capital of
Ohio. Mr. Foraker did not have
much money to Invest, but he had a
client who had plenty, and so there
were negotiations looking to the
purchase of this paper for $135,000
Then, the Idea was, that Standard
Oil would own the newspaper, and
would of course control Its utter
ancee. . . Tnrougn tni newspaper
Standard . Oil would advise people
how to rote, would tell readers what
the "historic tendencies" of the Re
publican party were, and what a
calamity it would be to the country
If the people should ever elect any
body but a Republican to any office.
Standard Oil was to own tne news-
Daner. lust aa it owned. Foraker.
The paper was to say what Standard
Oil dictated, Just as Foraker In the
senate was to do. -
This has been done more or less
directly, no doubt In several state,
capitals and other cities. Its tainted,

offices; even, as It sometimes seems
in Judicial chambers.
And Standard Oil la only one of
