to the delay In coaling the battleships
at this port.

get away because several vessels had

Branter of Clinton, Mo., son of Wil
liam Branter, a police Judge In that
city, killed himself In Jail here , early
today by battering his head against the
side or his ceu during a arunaen
frenzy.
Branter is a drummer for an Omaha
house. He arrived In town yesterday
and was plotted up arunK - Dy tne po
lice at the depot. .
He protested vociferously against
being .taken to jail and was violent
when locked up. - When the keeper
looked Into his ceu today tie found him
dead. He had literally beaten hla brains
out on the stone wall of the cell.

paid fare In any of the cars. And it
wasn't a freight train, either. Not by
long shotv It was a special. Every
car was a Pullman. And the occupants
well, they were only the fellows who
make the pnasenger business for the
railroada. Kvery one of them had a
pocket full of passea on lines all over
the country.

to an order received bere . today from
President Roosevelt. 70,000 acres of land
on tha California-Oregon line is set
aside as a bird preserve. All of the
Islands In lower Klamath lake and the
swamplands In the lake district that are
unsuitable for agricultural purposes are
included In the reserve. While the or
der issued by the president prohibits
the takinar or destruction of any birds.

bought hla. first consignment of butter
on time. Being a well groomed, pros
perous appearing man, the driver was
well -pleased at securing the new cus
tomer. This driver was in the employ
of the Crystal Ice company.

Manager H. Si. Carlock. of the Crys
tal company., saw a new name on the
credit list that night. He investigated,
found that Myers was a hustler, had a.
neat, attractive shop and give the em
bryo-merchant a weekly credit.;'-. Myers
always paid his bills promptly at the
end of the week that is, until last Saturday-
when there was no payment for
the goods delivered by the various
wholesale houses. There will never 1
any payment unless the police find
Myers.- -
The man who has disappeared whs

solicitors and established a flourishing
business with boarding houses, hoteln
and other large consumers of butter.

He didn't wait to pay the rent on the
store building nor to pay for the deliv
ery wagon and driver he had hired from
Alloway & - Hunter,-, nor to pav for the
services of his two solicitors. "All thesa
things were rorgotten. There are a
dozen smaller bills yet for groceries se
curedalways on credit from various
wholesale houses, which, are quite likely
to remain unpaid alo.- ,
Myers had a wife , and two children.
They, too, have gone. Nobody knows
where, but they've gone. ' And with
them has gone a goodly .bundle of paper
