CUV WILL
FIGHT IT OUT
Light Company Willing to
Lower Jtates If Council
Subsides Its Contention,
"However, Likely to Be
Carried to Final Decision.
Unless the city calls off 'its fight
with the Fortland Railway. Light &
rower company there will be no reduo-
tlon In the city's lighting bill for next
near. , If It does, . tha company will
aubmtt a bid whereby the city can save
115,000 in five years. Inasmuch as th.t
city has already saved about 1X5,000
since February by refusing to pay in
excess of the amount the city offi
cials think proper, it is believed the
fight will not be declared off until
the company comes In with a lower bid.
The company submitted Its bid yes
terday to tha liKht committee of the
executive board at tha same figures of
7 lor are lights in the underground
districts and (63.60 In the aerial dis
tricts. .As an alternative, should' the
city call off its fight, the prices would
be 173 and 160. The bid w41! be con
sidered at a -special meeting of tha ex
ecutive board Saturday morning at
8:80 o'clock.
The company's bid on Hoandlepower
electrlo lamps waa 11 a month for each
month. This was considered too high
by the members of the committee and
by Mayor Lane, who was presiding.
At the present time the city la paying
tits a monin ror l.exa tamps,- wmi-u
the members also think is too low.. .
Oskar Huber, a representative of the
company., was -present -.and when ina
bid was opened and read he aala he
felt sure a mistake had been made and
he hurriedly telephoned to President
Josselyn. Returning to the meeting a
few minutes later ha aald the company
would rather - have the incandescents
plaoed- on a meter rate.
Huber snoke to the members at yen-
terday's meeting and declared the bids
were fair, and endeavored to explain to
tha . members why ha .thought - them
fair. He was not able to Impress the
members to the extent that they took
immediate action in warding me city s
huge lighting contract to the lone
bidder.
From expressions made by the mem.
bers yesterday, the city will not award
a contract unless the company dis
poses to be fair, as the city estimates
the fairness of trie lighting; contract.
euid furthermore it Is not believed the
city will call off Its fight with the
company. Greene said if the- present
contention between the city agd the
company was carried into the courts
and the city upheld that the city would
go back further than February in the
matter of evening up with tha com
pany. Tha city's contention is that tho
company Is charging about one-third
too much for the current furnished the
city under the terms of the present
contract. , . ,
