While the talk of a combination
among the larrer dealers of hooa has
been going the rounds of the trade and
press, for the paat month and haa been
treated aa a huge joke by some and. en
tirely Ignored by others, the talk may
not be so much of a Joke after alL
Present Indications point to combi
nation of big people to hold the price In
cheek a sufficient time to force out the
little growers. A few years of ' low
prices would ruin most of the small
ones financially, and during theae ye&ra
the big ones oould be safely protected
by term contraote which thev would be
able to make In advance, providing there
was a combination and all the big pro
pis were In it.
The present situation is such thnt few
of the smaller grower will be able to
survive it and next year they will be
forced to plow up their yards. Thoae
remaining will of oourae reap the bene-
1US. ,
Of course there is no combination
among dealers to do thla aay the deal
ers out things certainly look that way.

Trade From Outside.
The market was very quiet for pota
toes during the past week. While there
waa some demand from the far north
for select stock and for which buyers
were paying as high as $1.10. the vol
ume of northern business was so small
that It could scarcely be counted. While
local trade Is quite fair for this time
of year, buyers are purchasing from
hand to mouth because Of a large per
cent of the supplies offered are not
fully matured. There) 1b no shlnninr de
mand outside of the small call from the
far north.

New York, Sept li. Stocks closed
today In the midst of a rally that car
ried them up nearly two points from ths
low figures, of the early trading In the
leaders. Union Pacific, Steel, Southern
Pacific, Reading, Northern Paclflo and
Illinois Central wera at the head of tha
advancing column. American Locomo
tive recovered a trifle. Brooklyn Union
uai was not traciea in. although it ad
vanced Its dividend to the 6 per cent
rate. . .....
The early decline was due to selling
by professional traders who -imagined
that the election In Maine, next week
might attract the attentloaf of the big
people who are under the market. The
so-called big people do not care what
happens in Maine, now that they1 have
decided that higher prices are glng to
happen in Wall street As soon aa the
little ones discovered this they began
ouying stocas again, causing tne rally.
On the curb market stocks were dull
in the early trading, but became' active
and advanced toward the close. Neither
cotton nor wheat were materially
changed as a result of the day's opera
tions. London was dull. A director
of distillers securities says ths divi
dend will not be passed.
