Nearly a thousand people attended' the
Labor day barbecue given at the Van
couver ferry rrova by tha Portland
lodge of the Modern Woodmen of Amer
ica. Spruce camp waa the host of the
occasion, although other camps were
present including one from Vancouver.
A feature of the picnic was the tug of
war between teams from Spruce camp
and from Vancouver. . The local team
iwon. The St. Johns band furnished
rnunio for the picnic. A card of sports
was provided and the events were held
notwithstanding the rain. Prizes were
awarded the winners.

John Olese, the man who enticed lit
tie 4-year-old Ida Fendel away from
hor home last week, pleaded guilty to
a cbartce of disorderly conduct today
and was sentenced to 90 days on the
rockplle. In this way he escapes fur
ther punishment for kidnaping the
child. Olese. a woodchopper, was
charred with child steal Inn when ar
rested, but Judge Van Zunte decided
thftt the state did not make a clear
case airalnat him. Before he left the
court room, however, he was rearrested
on tha new charge and made to face the
Judge again today.

Walter Bernard, a farmer of Corne
lius, aged 60 years, died In St. Vin
cent's hospital last night He was In

at first. The body will be sent to Cor
nelius today.
