At a meeting of the ways and means
committee of the city council yesterday
morning the members discovered that
the western Union Telegraph company
is operating a clock system in Portland
without a franchise. After a discussion
as to the best way to bring the com
pany to time, the members referred the
matter to Mayor Lane and the city exe
cutive board.
At the first meeting held by the city
automobile board of registry in two
months, the members granted licenses
to 7 owners and to 14 chauffeurs. Sev
eral of tha latter will be compelled to
demonstrate to the board, however,
their ability to run a machine about the
city before they finally receive their li

Trains are now running to
State Line, -which Is just , six

On of the largest 'natator

company, . the contract having
been recently let for a cement
swimming pool 100 feet wide
and having a length of 200 feet
.. It is beginning to be realised
that a large portion of the fat
beef cattle to supply the big
Paclflo coast packing establish
ments must necessarily come
from the rich Klamath region
.where hay is cheap and is pro- 4
duced in great abundance. A
number of henvy cattle .dealers'
are now buying cattle in Crook
county and other cattle grow
ing districts in eastern Oregon,
which will be driven Into the
Klamath district for fall and
winter feeding.
Members of tomorrow's ex
cursion party will have an op
portunity to witness the im
mense scale on which the live
stock business is carried on in
the territory tributary to
Klamath Falls, and this is but
one of the many probable indus-
x tries of this rich and favored
region.

Problem for Piano Buyers
FIGURE THIS OUT
How can a retail dealer, who has an
fnormom rent to pay for ia retail store,
sell a piano as cheap as we can from
our wholesale house
To sell a piano at retail coats us not
a cent extra, thus enabling you to save
at least $75 on a piano, that being the
amount all retail dealers figure on as
the selling cost of a piano. After a re

cost' and then adds his profit, can you
figure out that we have any compe
tition when It comes to values.- If we
cannot convince you upon one visit to
our store of our ability to save you
considerable money in tne purchase of
a piano, then you certainly are not in
