Members of the. firs committee of
the city executive board held a special
meeting yesterday afternoon and de
cided to proceed with the purchase of
a water tower. Chief Campbell had
prepared, for' specifications for the
water tower and bids will be adver
tised for. ' In the meantime the mem
bers of the" committee will look about
theaclty for a suitable location for the
new equipment. In reply to a question
- by Mayor Lane, Chief Campbell stated
that 85 fire hydrants had been accepted

After consulting with attorneys con
nected wjth the hearing of ex-Patrolman
M. P. Murphy, the members of the
civil service commission have decided
- to hold the trial of .Murphy tomorrow
morning at 10 o'clock. Murphy was dis
charged by the executive board several
week ago and appealed to the commis
sion for a hearing. The action of the
. ; executive board was based upon the tes
timony of a number of residents of Mon
tavilla who swore that Murphy was ln-
- toxlcated while on duty.
James Btefflln, living at the head of
Marquam gulch, and Domlnlck La
Grand, Fifth and Arthur streets, came
to a misunderstanding last night over
" money matters. Acoordlng to Le
Grand, Btefflln pulled out an empty re
volver and aimed it at La Grand, who
promptly Knocked htm down and dis
armed nun. Mternm made his escape.

awear to a warrant today. Both men
are scavengers.
