Detective Glenn Howell, who has re
turned to duty after a vacation spent
on hia father's ranch aouth of Alsea,
tells a story of hunting deer in the surf
of the Paclflo.
When near Seal Rock, below Newport,
on his way back, to Portland, Sunday,
Howell was astonished 'to see a young
fawn on the edge of the breakers. The
little animal Moved slowly and appeared
to be exhausted, so he waded into the
water, caught it by the ear and led it
ashore. The fawn had been chased by
hounds, had dashed into the surf to es
cape, where, the cold water had thor
oughly chilled it It was so, stiff it
could scarcely walk. As he was unahle
to bring it to Portland he presented the

the regular proceedings that are re
quired for a franchise for a line of
railway will have to be followed in the
ase of the clock franchise and It will
be several months before the measure

the canneries which will operate will

lina only. There is also some talk of
the Altoona Packing company's cannery
at Altoona and the Warren Plant at
Cathlamet packing during the fall, but
