'Portland Union 8tockyards, Sept
1 Whatever the future rnay show, the
present outlook for livestock-is of the
very best. All lines are disposed to
how strength and for top stud It is in
variably the, rule for top quotations to
rula This Is true of every line, but
perhaps the strongest tone is noted In
hogs, where the arrivals are scant and
are far below the requirements of the
trade. ; ,t
The fact that eastern. hogs are con
stantly rolling toward the Pacific coast
seems .to have no effect whatever to
ward changing Portland or other Paclflo
coast hog; values, and for best stuff the
receivers are - experiencing not the
slightest ' difficulty In Instantly dispos
ing of all- arrivals.
Cattle market shows rather liberal ar
rivals 'for the 24 hours, but, the tone
or tne marxec is so gooa mat it is hav
ing" no effect upon price-making. Best
steers are still firmly held at $4 and
all arrivals of that quality can easily
bring the price.- For some time there
has been a dearth of well-finished steers
and for this reason the market Is un
usually firm.
While there were fair arrivals of
sneep today, tne fact that none came
during the preceding 48 hours was a
great aid .to the market and the tone
ror gooa eiun is retier man ever. Best
wethers are moving freely at $3.50 and
values In other branches of the sheep
rnarket are holding rigid.

3rants Pass, Or., Sept. ljU-It has been
found that the frosts which visited the
melon and tomato fields along Rogue
river last week have done more damage
than was at first believed. On several
farms the vines were completely killed
and the fruit badly damaged.. The
frosts were confined to the river bottom
landa, and did not reach the orchards
and fields of the mountain sides. This
is the first time In 80 years that de
structive frosts have occurred in August
in southern Oregon. It is but another
of the very unusual and peculiar fea

the crop is less than average, aay, three
