During the regatta week two very
successful concerts were given under
the direction of Dr. Enrfl Enna of Port
land. The Norwegian singing socletiea
of Astoria and Portland and the Swed
ish Singing club Columbia of Portland
forming the big chorus conducted by
Dr. Enna. The soloists were: Mr.
Roberts, baritone, of Portland; Miss
Con vers, soprano, of Clatskanle: Dr.
Emll Enna, filano, and Mlas Rogers,
'cello, from Portland. A. Holmqulst of
Portland sang the Incidental baritone

French Bark Mlchelet Drifts Along
Beach Daring Night.
Astoria. Or., Aug. .31.- A strong ar
gument In favor of a steam pilot boat
et -the mouth of the Columbia in place
of a sailing schooner was presented
Saturday night when the French bark
Michelet appeared off the mouth of the
river. The wind fell dead and, caught
In the current, the Frenchman drifted
-close to the beach, although at no time
In less than 25 fathoms or water.
The pilot boat was about three miles
distant, but could not be worked close
enough to get a man on board the Mich
elet.. and there they remained over
nltfht. drifting from Tillamook Rock to
the lightship. In the morning it fresh
ened up and by 6 o'clock the windjam
mer was steering for the mouth of the
Tlver. Phe reached Astoria about noon
after having presented a clean bill of
health.

Two WindjaninVrs and Two Tramp
Steamers Arrive in Harbor.
Two sailing vessels and two large
tramp steamers liaie arrived In the
harbor since Saturday, the sail inn ves
sels carrying s:nerai cargo from Kn
rope and the steamers coming in bal
last to carry away wheat.
The windjammers are the French
bark Cael and the British ship Abr-
foyle. The tjael came Into Columbia
duck No. 1 this morning where, she
will deliver about 3,000 tons tif 'general
cargo consigned to Myer, Wilsun &
Co. The Aberfoyle Is In the stream
with 10.000 barrels of cement con
signed to W. P. Fuller A Cn A berth
will be found for tier as soon us pos
sible. The Gael made the run from London
to Portland In 133 dayu and It took
tha Aberfoyle 182 days to make tha
same rim from Antwerp. The captain
of the Gael reports having encountered
heavy winds in the vicinity of Cape
Horn. It took two weeks to double the
promontory. The Aborfoyle's voyage,
was made tedious, by head winds and
calms. One of her crew, en Austrian
named Frulieh, committed suicide early
in the year by hanging. He had been
out of his mind for some tlrhe before
the act.
Neither the Gael nor the Aberfoyle
are chartered for outward business so
far as known , here. . ,
The two tramp steamers that ar
rived up are the Queen Amelie and j
Falls of Nith, bothL under the British
flag. They are ar the mills of the
Eastern & Western Lumber company
being lined for wheat cargoes. The
Falls of Nith came up yesterday from
San FranPlsco. She will loaded by
the Portland Flouring Mills, company
for Europe.
The Queen Amelie arrived In yes
terday from Bremerton. She is under
charter to Kerr, G If ford & Co. to carry
wheat to Europe.

Wednesdays and Fridays, returning on
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
This Is the first time for over six
years that a boat has attempted to
make regular trips from here. The
merchants have promised the owners
a substantial part of their freight.

he came here as master of the British
bark Clan Mackenzie, which some time
prior to Captain Currle taking com
mand, was sunk in the Columbia river

kenzie was subsequently raised and
repaired and sent home to England. A
few vesrs ago she returned In command
of Captain Currle.
The steamer Stale of California will
be at Ainsworth dock late this even
ing from Sun Francisco.

this morning from Astoria In company
with the schooner Annie E. Smalo The
Daghlld Is In from Caldera after a
voyage of 61 days and the Annie R.
Smale Is In from Makameli after a voy
age of 25 days. The Daghlld Is uh

Barry,, wheat to Europe. The Annie E

tractors, which left here early last Mon
day morning loaded down with supplies
for the contractors' camps, struck a
rck in the Skeena river when 20 miles

All talk of cancellation of contracts
on account of the refusal of bids on
the Clear lake dam earlier In the sea
son has ceased and the people are
working in harmony with the service.
Bids have been advertised for the
hauling of supplies to Clear lake, and
this represents one of the hardest fea
tures of construction, as Clear lake is
remote from markets, and over bad
roads.
Lands In the vicinity of the lake have
been selling In anticipation of the in
crease in value later. v .

scenery, plants and forests of Oregon,
and vhlle at Pelican Lodge, the guest
of E. H. Harriman, he spent many hours
out in the beautiful woods, surround
ing the lodge, dictating to Mr. Harrl
man's stenographer. Mr. Harriman will
publish Mr. Mulr's book for him, which
will very likely be one of this winter's
publications.
