Good Volume of rail Trade.
Fall trade has opened up under very
bright circumstance in the Portland
wholesale market. The outlook for
business was never better than at this
time and Jobbers are showing; no dispo
sition to be other than optimistic. A
feature of special interest to the, trade
at this Mm Is that the good indications
ara not shown In any one line alone, but
the Indications are good for eefy busi
ness. Perhaps the first to feel the effects
of the opening of fall trade were the
wholesale grocers, who sav that their
salesmen are doing more business, are
sending more orders and report a better
outlook than ever before. The crops are
a much better than expected and In
almost every line prices have been lib
eral this far and are showing no indica
tion of doin otherwise Wheat Is high
and is In heavy demand at present
prices, and the same Is true of other
grains. The fruit crops are enormous
and prices paid compare quite favorably
with those of-other seasons.
Soma Report Butter Shortage.
With the exception of two creameries
all makers are reporting a very good
tone In the local butter market .AH hut
one of t..o ''lty makers report belni;
short of butter Instead of being forced
to cut values, but this condition is not
noted among the outside producers. For
Instance, more butter Is being received
than for some time, tie

Tg-ff Market Is Firmer.
All thruuKh'tlie egg market a firmer
tone is today ruling and most dealers
are now holding their supplies at the
recently adouis-d values.. Receipts are
liot near so heavy in fact, in sumo
quarters a shortage exists and prices are
for that reason much more easily main
tained. Receivers of eft K.i say stocks
move ont better, too, because of the
better quality, mil commission houses
that a week or 14 days ago nightly car
ried over stocks of about 76 to 100
cases now say they do not havo more
than. 25 cases or so on hand each even
)u. .At the lower prices quoted by receiv
ers on Saturday, the -rnleKen marttet is
cleaned up today, and while trade is
dull, as Is usual on Monday, prices are
not d"l)ressed.
liberal Demand for Peaches.
There Is a very liberal demand for
peaches in the Front street market at
thin time ajul prices are, therefore being
maintained at Saturday's averages
Sales are being made from 50c to 7;ie
on the general run of stock and Sec to
"30c a bet on the pinks or extra fancy.
Cabbage market Is holding- very stiff
at 2c a round today, with supplies light.
Tomato market is Just about holding
Its own, with sales from 40c a box up
ward. Larger supplies are shown lot-ally.
While the watermelon market Is
.rather slow with liberal supplies, prices
are unchanged from the high point.
Potato Market la Quiet.
There remains a very quiet tone In
the local potato market, offering by
producers of ordinary stock are very
heavy and for this reason- the trade Is
taking but little interest in proceedings.
Then, again, there Is a void of shipping
demand.
Sweet potatoes ar showing a lower
range of values, owing to the' larger
supplies and downward trend to prices
In tho south. During ih past week
southern values showed a decline of 4,!c
per hundred pVunds Today's price
along the street is generally put at
$2. SO. A car was unloaded this morn
ing in select condition.
Brief Notes of the Trade.
A small amount of business la re
ported In hop contracts, but no move
ment of spot stock is noted. Contract

Portland I'nlon Stock va"rtls. Aug.
There Is great strength in the hog
market nt this time. In fact the strength
Is pronounced In every lino of livestock
that shows cihmI minlttv. Demund ror
well finished stuff never was so good
as at tills time and prices being puld re
flect the great scarcity of supplies.
Just now the line of hogs arriving
are well finished and us long as thin
movement keeps up all will be well for
the price. Hogs are being turned Into
the stubble fields in eastern Oregon and
Washington and thev will remain there
about a month or so When this class
of stock begins to move toward the
market it is Invariably the signal for a
downfall of values for stubble fed hogs
aro fair only at the best.
Cattle market Is firm as are sheep and
all values are being safely maintained.
All praise New System.
While som buyers and sellers of live
stock who aro looking out well for
themselves, are not disposed to refer
with good feeling to the new system
of quoting livestock ns inaugurated by
The Journal and helped on by some
of the local commission handlers, tho
producer Is the man who Is getting the
benefit and lie is loud in his praise of
the new order of tilings. Formerly it
was the rule for all sorts of flat prices
to bo quoted out to Induce shipments,
but when the stock arrived the value
was generally unaatisfactury. 1'niU'f
the new order of things tho producer
and shipper can see fnr themselves lust
what each Individual lot Is obtaining.
Pulling Buyers Off the Road.
Perhaps the greatest benefits to the
producer and shlnper unriwr the new or
der of things In tho locnl livestock mar
ket and one that has. met with so much
success in the east where supply and
demand always regulate the price-Is
the Kia'lual withdrawal of Independent
buvers from the Interior, where they
traveled at heavy expense and pui
-based scant supplies All this travel
ing expenHo eame out of the pockets
of the producer end It Is natural that
thov should feel Letter when this drain
Is stopped up.
I'uder the old ordf r of things the
was practically no competition f,,r en
Inner had a certain territory to cover
and there was seldom the slightest sign
of competition. I'ndor the in w order
of things, however, all arrivals at th
Portland yards find the buyers from all
the packers on hand each d.-iv. mi com
petition Is quite keen and the fall mar
ket value is obtained.

BITOKMOVS WHEAT MOVEM7E1TT.
The heaviest movement of wheat ever
shown In this city or In foot on the Pa
cific coast is now on. Today Portland
received U10 cars of wheat as compared
with 113 cars (Saturday and 60 cars the
previous day. There was never such ao
tlvity in the wheat market here as at
the present time. It la estimated that
fully 17,500,000 bushels of wheat have
already been sold. This Is considerably
more than a third of the crop.
