POTATO MARKET
Trade Is Slow, With Alaska
Demand About OverNo
' Business With South.
Wholesale market features:
Potato market very julet.
Bwmi potatoes are lower.
Eggs holding steadier.
Poultry down another notch.
Salmon coming from the sound.
Cii.ined salmon holding firm.
"Tomato market la lower.
Local grapes drug market.
Heavy veal depresaea price.
Pressed hoga quoted firmer.
Potato Market Very Qnl
Practically nil Alaska bualness In the
local potato market Is over for the 1908
season. After the flrat of the month,
when the steamer soils for the north
there will scarcely be any call at all for
It la not likely that any later steamer
will be able to get Into the northern
waters before the freese-itp. This means
that dealers have practically quit their
purchases for Alaska account although
a few smalUsales for that direction may
still be made.
With the absence of the northern call
there la pruottcally nothing doing In the
potato market at the moment. Local re
gulrements have already been filled, the
heavy arrivals of half-matured stock
choking the channels of trade. There Is
no southern demand at the moment but
despite this there Is no pressure of note
In the market and outside of the with
drawals of the premium for Alaska
stock the market ts unchanged.
Sweet potatoes are In very heavy re
ceipt at the moment and some dealera
have cut the price to 12.802.75.
Thus far receipts of local onions have
generally been of very small sire and
In consequence demand has not been
very heavy.
almon Market la rimer.
There Is an Increasing demand for Co
lumbia river canned salmon of every
quality and prices are being fuljy main
tained with more orders now coming
than can be confirmed.
The extent of- the demand for Alaska
palmon shows to some extent the im
provement In the better grade of fish.
The New York Commercial eays of the
situation:
" A continued good Interest locally Is
noted In Alaska red salmon on the basis
of opening quotations of 11. IB per dos
en t. o. T. coaat, wfilt outside packers
accepting business at 2 Ho per dozen less
on good brands and $1.10 per dozen on
Httle known brands. These concessions
. are said to be more or less general, and
in some cases are In the shape of brok
ers' commissions. The large buyers are
said to have booked order quite freely
at the 11.15 per doten basis on Alaska
red tails, though many reports are cur
rent that the preferred buyers secured
material concessions from the opening
figures. A good deal of business has
been put through In medium red and
cohoes on the basis of J1.00 f. o. b.
coast." .
Bl Demand for Beds.
New York Journal of Commerce says:
"Attention Is still monopolized by the
ajllmon proposition. Orders for the 1908
pack of Alaska reds are coming in free
lv from all parts of the country, and It
lit freely predicted that at the present
rate of sales the entire pack will be
old within the next day or two. In
spite of ...e comparatively low prices
made for this season's output and the
heavy demand, there Is a (rood deal of
talk of concessions made to the large
jobbers. In some celling quarters it
is admitted that special discounts have
been made to the heavy buyers, but It
Is asserted that in all esses these con
censions were of a confidential charac
ter, and that the cut has been by no
means general. Agents of other pack
ing Interests deny that they have made
or that there has been occasion for them
to make any departure from the opening
price of 11 15 f. o. h. const on the Alas
ka reds grade. However, It seems to
he well t'stamlshed that one of the
packers, who is a prominent though not
one of the largest factors In the busi
ness, has made, through a widelv dis
tributed circular, a flat price of $1.12S
f. o. b. coast on his brands."
Heavy Teal Depresses Market.
Of late the-arrivals of heavy sizes of
dressed veal have been very liberal and
the result Is that the trade Is over-i
stocked. Select sizes, however, are still j
llndinsr a eood denned at printed prices
.diKft for dressed hogs Is firm along
the street wltn fancy stock weighing
from 140 to 150 pounds selling at 8jj
Si lc a nound.
Cnlcken market Is weak and lower
with sales of hens around 13c during
the past 24 hours. Springs sold at loc
generally.
Egg market is steadier with most sales
of select at 2fic Some withdrawals
from local storage are reported with of
ferings around 2426c.
Brief Rotas of the Trade.
Fresh salmon Is now being received
from Aberdeen. Same price.
Celery arrivals are slightly better but
the matket is holding good around 65 g
76c a dozen.
Local grapes are In an oversupply
and varieties are not finding much call
over 75c. Best outside stock ranging
from 11.00 to $1.50 a crate although
the market is slightly easier.
Tomato market Is lower because of
heavier arrivals and fancy stock Is re
ported sold from 80c to 40c a box
Cheaper stock at any old figure.
Front street sells at the following
prices. Those paid shippers are less
regular commissions:

With the heaviest arrivals of wheat
In the history of local shipping, the
wheal market is again very active and
prices are already showing the effects
of an Improved demand.
Most of the sales for foreign Kcount
are for bluestem an'i this is having
a very stimulating effect upon values
In that line. The lead In price Is there
fore Increased another cent a bushel,
making the dlf fercnti'il between club
and bluestem 5c Instead of 4c yesterday
and compared with the usual differen
tial of 2e a bushel.
Many more Inquiries are being re
ceived for wheat from tin- Medlterni
nean, most of them being for bluestem
but the trade believes that the orders
will soon call for club if bluestem Is
not obtainable.
The cash oats market continues very
stiff with producers unwilling to let
go even at present prices. At country
points the trade has been paving on a
basin of $28 Portland fur the past week
for No. 1 white
On the board of trade today there was
an advance of 4c In December wheat,
but September was unchanged at 89c.
Oats market was quiet with a frac
tional advance in December and the
same prices for September.
No change appeared In barley futures
on the board to(av and the following
official prices of t,he transactions are
shown;

fundamental principles of a healthy up
ward movement. Public Inierest Is al
weyg essential to a broad market, but
the fart that stocks are keln5 markil
up on limited buying hardly speaks well
for the stability of prices particularly
In view of existing conditions. As the
election approaches political news Is
likely to cause an acute situation and
business Interests generally will hatjdly
be disponed to Increase their committ
ments until the outlook Is more assur
ing. The steel trade Is considered the
bsrometei of general trade conditions,
displaying a steady tendency, but signs
of further Improvement are not pro
nounced, which should tend to make
further bullish activity In the stock
market look rather Inconsistent.
