A decHtie of 20c per hundred pounds
la noted In tho sugar market today. The
flrat change was made by the California
& Hawaiian company anil became effec
tive at 8 o'clock this morning. Shortly
afterward a similar reduction wan an
nounced by the Western Refinery, which
put both product on" the same basis.
The cause of the decline Is the recent
lowering of values on raw and refined
sugar In New York, refined dropping to
6c and raw sells around $3.95.
Poultry Belling Lower.
A decline of about Ho is noted In
the chicken market for the past L'4
hours, following the very liberal ar
rivals and a rather slow tone in the
buying. Fancy hens are bringing around
' 14c, with ordinary lots a fraction less
than this. Spring chickensbroilers
and fryers, are selling at a lower range,
today's values being 15fy 16c, according
to quality.
There is a slightly better showing of
quality In local egg receipts, but the
Improvement has not yet been marked
because most of the arrivals were gath
ered during the heated period. Hetter
quality is expected the coming week.
Cutting Price of Batter.
While practically not enough butter
is being made by local creameries to
supply the full wants of the trade here,
some or the makers in rear or the in
flux Of California and eastern stock have
begun cutting their values and this may
force a general decline In the market
within the next few days. One cream
ery is still asking 32 He for its butter
but the general market stands at 31 Vc,
with one or two sellers letting go at
30c.
Cheese market continues to show firm
ness, with a very liberal outward move
ment, but prices are showing no dispo
sition to change.
Bweet Potato Outlook,
he outlook for aweet potato prices
seems to re goon, because or the dam
age to a large part of the crop as re
cently told In The Journal dispatches.

quite good shape, and while the demand

he trade has experienced much diffi

prices as low as 40 3 50o a box for or
dinary stock. The best the market is
going at the present time for the fanci
est goods coming Is 11.261.50.
Local pears are In better supply and
somewhat better quality is shown.
Most of the arrivals from The Dalles
sell around $1 a box, but. some select
goods sell at J1.25.
Brief States of the Trade.
With enormous supplies lower prices
are ruling on tomatoes. Some sales
down to 40c for good stock, but n.ost
everything sells at 60c.
A fractional decline is noted In peach
market prices
Cantaloupes are slightly lower, owing
to the mixed sizes now romlne. Ouaittv

Of unfavorable weatner.
Dealers report the disappearance of
Columbia river fresh salmon from the
local market and supplies will now come
from the coast streams. Values un
changed. Large slr.es of dressed veal have
formed the bulk of late arrivals and
therefore prices have seldom reached
the top.
Dressed hogs are In firm request, but
few are willing to pay over 8c, even for
the best.
