Bad Spider Inada Hopjarfla.
While reports from the country Indi
cate that thus far only a few scattered
nectlona are affected, the red spider
has made Its appe.irarco In som of
the valley ymds In greater nnmhers
tha for. many years. Whether the pest
will ln rease or not cannot be foretold
but the outlook Is not of the most fa
vorable. Tim work of the red spider Is
to cap the hop vines, thus taking all the
nourishment from the hops and not al
lowing them to; mature. When the red
spicier K"ts In Its work In real earnest
the top of the vines begin to turti red.
then yellow and tinallv die for lack of
nourishment, t Wheie the vine Is af
lfeted by excessive drought the yellow
color begins at the bottom and sradual
ly works its way lo the top.
Crop Condition Generally Good.
Outside of the red spider trouble there
Is nothing wrong v. ltli the growing hop
cr"p m Oregon this season. Sumpte
branches of vines received In this city
show Immense growth of vine wltii
an enormous number of clusters. This
condition is noted In tho yards where
cultivation has been carried on gener
fill but where the work linn been lax
the anls clearlv show ti e effects of
the rei-t-nt .IniiiKht.
Dealers Afraid of Market.
There is no use .Ienirir the fact that
hop dealers in general ma ul'nil.l of the
market. Those who have large con
tracts to fill are on both sides of the
fence and do not know which way to
J'.injp. If they encourage the growers
to pick all their growth there will be so
many hops producer! that dealers are
predicting prices down to 2c a pound.
If, on the other hand, the growers gen
erally allow the, hops to ' ro,t on the
villi's there ma not be a sufficient
number of bales gathered to fill all the
contract.' for It Is positively known
that the dealers have sold more hops
siwrt the prerent e:son than e.ver be
fore in the history of the Industry In
this state. Most of these contracts
have been made bv three or four firms
ho generally they have the making or
unmaking of hop market prices In their
grasp.
Just nt present tlenlers are showing
ro disposition to dabble in spot hops
and only a few of the shorts are taking
on new contracts. Most of tho work
in this latter line Is supposed to be
for the account' of Isaac 1 incus A Sons
of Tacoma. ;
New Bohemian Hops In New York.
Tiie New York Producers' Price Cur
rent says of the general situation
there:
"As usual at this season of tho year,
we are having a waiting market. Brew
ers are stocked against any present
needs, and dealers will naturally oper
ate oautlouslv until the new crop is
harvested. Values locally are merely
nomtn.il. and while we have revise! quo
tations slightly they still seem high
for the qua lilies shown. Most, of the
remaining l.'ts are anything but attrac
tive. A bale or two of new Bohemian
hops have arrived, and a few samples
of seedlings from New York state are
also shown: the latter are held at about
lfic. but there is scarcely any Interest
In them. No change can be noted In the
general ontlook for the Incoming crop,
and .1 good yield Is expected In most
sections.
"Julie a eood deal of picking Is ex
pect? 1 In ibis state next week, where
the crop Is maturing rapidly. Indica
tions point to good quality In the state
hops, although there will be some per
centage of moldy stork. Cables from
Fnglan ! report the weather too cold
for the crop, delavlng the ripening. Es
timates are still placed at 500.000 hun
dredweight, which is approximately
100,000 hundredweight short of actual
requirements. But a good deal of stock
Is being carried over this year In brew
ers' hands and if we get an export de
rrand from there It will be only on a
low basis of values. Continental re
ports continue good."
Brief Notts of th Trade.
Kggs are quoted firmer with many
more sales at 26c than formerly.
roultry arrivals hae been heavy of
late out thus far all have cleaned up.
Local cabbage is practically out of
market and the price of California stock
is higher.
Tomato market has dpvpped consider
ably with enormous arrivals. Still lower
prices to come fiorn indications.
Peaches are fractionally lower with a
continuance of heavy local receipts.
Lemon clings from California are like
wise showing Increased arrivals.

Interests agree that there never was a
time when feed prices were ho firmly
held or the outlook was so pronounced
for a continuance of high values thun
at the present time.
Few of the northwestern mills are
being operated as yet hecauso most of
them still retain liberal supplies of old
flour and as there Is no disposition
among oriental buyers to invade me
market In any greRt numbers, the pros
pects for liberal or even fair supplies
of feed are not of the brightest.
Taken together with a smaller oats
and barley crop than In late years, the
mlllfeed market today stands In a po
sition where little hope Is given fend
ers as to any future discount in values.
A smaller hav imp has likewise been

Dnnlap Hat Display.
Dunlfip hat displays demand and re
ceive recognition from peveral differ
ent standpoints. In the first place the
Dunlap hat is the only one that Is dis
played all over the union on the same
day. and the popularity of the hat Is
such that it holds its customers and
secures thousands of new devotees
every year. This Is indicated by the
phenomenal growth of the Dtinlap man
ufacturing plant. The attention our
display of the ; Dunlap hats has re
ceived from the traveling public has
been the most flattering. We Invite in
spection of the new fall blocks trust
ing that It will bring forth an acknowl
edgement that the Dunlap styles for
1 908-9 are deserving of the leadership
they are accorded.
