There is a big fight up the valley for
Willamette valley wheat, and millers
are bidding over each otner in a way
that makes the lieurt of the producer
bent much faster. The competition is
so keen t ha t as high as 8.c has been
paid at primary points for lids nort
wheat, which means somewhat over UP;
here. The size of the valley crop is so
small that there Is nothing doing in
that grade in an expert way not half
enough of the grain being grown to sup-
lv even the local milling demand.
Cash oats market is firmer, and most
uiyers ai o now eagerly orroring on a
asls of- $27 a ton for best white stock
hen- While the growers are showing
disposition to let go of somo of their
stock, not half enough Is being offered
fill the demand.
Parley Is quiet, but figures quoted
seem to be firm.
Hay market continues last
trong tone, with no change in
being quoted.
Kxport flour sales are slightly In
creased, with a fractionally better price
tiling generally: While for a time
somo of the Interior millers were will
ing to unload as low as $" -0 net, the
ores at interior points have been gen
erally noed about zitr a barrel above
this. While the orient is not offering
generally over $3.4'", 3.4;, a barrel, no
sales at this time are reported under
$3.I0, and from that figure millers are
asking up to $3 70, according; to brand.
On the board of trade today there was
a slightly weaker tone in wheat, hut
values show no change from yesterday
for either option In September oats
there was a fractional gain at the, close
although the opening- was weaker and
lower. December was unchanged at
i .in. not 11 options or barley were un
changed for the lav.

Spokane, Wash., Aug. 2.1. Professor
K. K. Klltott of the "Washington State
! colli-ge., was in the city yesterday on
ids way to Pullman from Alaska,
where lie made a -special In vest Iga t ion
and study of the "Alaska" whe.c.
j heralded throughout the country as tho
I corning wheat of the west. Mr. Kllloi'
j says "Fields of Alaska wh.-at ex
amined wtll not run over 3.1 bushels to
the acre and the highest rooordeii yield
for wheat is 100 bushels lo the Her".
Twcnty-f'.ve per cent of the wheat in
Adams' field is not entirely Alaska
wheat, but Is badly mixed with other
varieties. The head droops ho.ivllv and
will lodge badly. The heads are not
of uniform size. Wheat is never found
i growing wild. Not even in Alaska. it
: will be but a few years before "Alaska '
j wheat will be but a memory."
