The notification exercises at the state
fair around will take placo In the Colo
neutn. which Is one of the largest and
finest amphitheatres In the country. Ar

modate a crowd of 15,000 people In the
huge structure. A speaker's stand has
been erected at one end of the building.
.The stand has been made large enough
to afford seating accommodations for
the members of the notification coramit
'te, the members of the national com
mittee who will be in attendance, and
a number of specially invited guests.
The notification 6peech and the address
'of acceptance by Mr. Kern will be brief
In order to give ample time for the de
livery of the speech by Mr. Bryan on
the subject of trusts, which, of course,
;will be the chief feature of the pro
gram. Mr. Bryan is expected to reach
the city early tomorrow mornlni from
Chicaeo accompanied by National Chair
man Mack. Both of the distinguished
leaders will he- the guests of Mr. and
Sirs. Kern white in

San Francisco, Aug. 24. Exactly at
10:10 o'clock today the signal run up
on Rear Admiral WlUiam T. Swin
burne's flagship, the MVest Virginia,
started seven cruisers of the Pacific
fleet and seven torpedoVboat destroyers
on their summer cruise1 to the Samoan
islands, which will end at Magdalena
bay next winter with a battle practice.
The cruisers and- torpedo boat-destroyers
were accompanied by the supply ship
Solace and the cruiseriijuf falo, whicn
fo aa far as Honolujii with the fleet,
hey are fully euuiped and prepared
ffjr any emergency tjiat might arise.
AJl- aaV yesterday, hundreds of visit
ors swarmed the big cruisers inspecting
them, and today the waterfront was
'lined with several thousand people who
witnessed the departure.
- Just after fTle ships had got outside
the harbor they nlowed up and each
cruiser threw a hawser to a torpedo
1 boat and they started to sea with the
little black destroyers in tow. The tow
lines are steel cables five Inches in
diameter. The towing of thedestroyers
is to be done by way of,icperlment If
It is successful much coal can be saved.
The vessels that went today are the
West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania
Tennessee, Washington, California and
South Dakota. They towod. In tha or
der given, the destroyers, Preble, Stuart,
Perry; Hopkins, Hull, Truxton and
Whipple.
The Pacific fleet is due at Honolulu
September 2. It will Jeave there Sep
tember 10 and arrive at Pago Pago Sep
tember 20. The fleet Is to leave Pago
Pago September 27 and will arrive at
HonolulU&on the return trip Octover 7,
leaving Uie same day for San Plega.
iTha fleet will arrive at San Diego Octo
ber 28 and stay until October 80. when
the vessels will leave for Magdalena bay
for battle practice. They ore due to
arrive at Magdalena bay November 1
and will stay until -November 80. .The
fleet will arrive at San Franclsoo le
cember 4.

A trough nf low nreni- ei-tenila
from British -"Columbia along the west
slope of the Rocky fountains south to
Arizona; over this territory the weather
is unsettled, and light rain has fallen at
scattered places in Oregon and Wash
ington. A small high pressure area is
central off. the Oregon coast, and a
large high' pressure area Is central over
the lake region. The barometer If, rela
tively low over the south Atlantic "and
gulf states, and rain, heavy in places,
lias occurred in that section. The tem
peratures are nearly normal east of the
Rocky mountains, but it is warmer than
usual In the northern portion of the
inter-mountain region, and slightly
cooler than usual In California, the Vil
lamette valley and the sound country.
The Indications are for showers to
night or Tuesday in northern Oregon-;
Washington and nothern Idaho. It will
be cooler tonight in northeastern Wash
ington and northern Idaho, and warmer
Tuesday in te 'Inferior "of western Ore
gon and western Washington.
