Bokcr Opens Next Sunday.
The Baker will open its season next
Sunday evening, the first attraction be
ing the famous little comlo opera star,
Grace Cameron, at the head of her own
company of 60 people In her latest suc
cess, "Utile Dolly Pimples." There
will be many celebrated musical come
dies visit Portland during the course
t" of the coming- season, but none which
will make more of a decided Impression
or create more of a real sensation among
theatre goers and lovers of music than
this one. Miss Cameron is one of the
best known of the comic opera stars of
the class specified as "dainty and pi
quant," and will be delightfully re
membered by all theatre goers for ner
charming work In "The Bostonlans."
"The Tenderfoot," "When Johnny Comes
Marching Home" and especially In "Plff,
Paff. PoufT," the great Casino theatre
success of New York.
The sale of seats for this opening at
traction of the season at the Baker will
commence at the box office next Thurs
day morning at 10 o'clock. There will
be no Sunday matinee, as the company
will not arrive In time for the after
noon performance. The Baker has al
ways held a first place In the hearts
of Portland theatregoers, and Is one of
the best situated and most home-like
theatres In the west. with the new
order of things, whereby the big musical
romedy and dramatic successes which
have never before appeared here at
other than top prices, will he seen at the
Baker at prices within reach of every
one. Indications point to a highly pros
perous year for the popular downtown
place of amusement.

The Orpheum It's Attractions.
The bill for the opening -week of the
Orpheum theatre, which closes tonight.
Is the first In vaudeville ever shown In
Portland, and the ooming attractions
beginning Monday matinee is another
all-star booking. The Portland theatre
goers have placed their stamp of ap
proval on the advanced vaudeville as
shown by the crowded houses during
the opening week. Much has been
heard of the attractions presented In
trie playhouses on the circuit, but it
remained for the opening week to show
the public. They have been shown, and
t-0 their satisfaction. The bill of at
tractions offered for the following weels
commencing Monday matinee will fur
ther demonstrate the right of the Or
pheum people to the exalted position
. they have attained and maintained for
o many years.
A -merry-go-round of music, melody
;3nd mirth Is the pleasing title given lv
Alf. Grant and Ethel Hoag to their ef
forts at entertaining. This team hns
appeared In New York productions for
several years ana tnis is their nr. it ap
i Dearance on the Pacific coast.
.John and Mae Burke are showing In
a clever little musical comedy act by
Win M. Creasy, styled How Patsy
Went to War. Patsy Is a messenger
- boy and enlists as a raw recruit In the
army, and the trials and tribulations of
the "raw" in learning the discipline of
army life and the manual of arms keeps
the audience In a continuous uproar.
The International favorites, John W.
World and Mlndell Kingston's sketch.
"It Isn't What They Do It's the Way
They Do It." is one continuous round
of pleasure, and Mr. World simply
clinches the reputation he established
years ago of beln one of the best
comedians In vaudeville.
Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Connelly present
a delightful little playet, "Sweethearts,"
which depicts true to life the cooing
lover and the bashful maiden.
One of the most striking vaudeville
novelties to be seen here this season
will be the latest production of Jesse I...
Iasky, entitled "A Night on a House
boat." The novel scenic setting Is that
of an elaborate double-decked house
boat, gaily decorated with garlands,
flags and lanterns, and enlivened by a
party of young people and their chap
erone, all "enjoying a summer outing.
Martinnettle and Sylvester, two re
markably agile and s-trenuous come
dians, who are often called "The Boys
With the Chairs," provide a novelty in
acrobats. While Joe Plyvester Is a well
known clown, dark Martinnettle Is a
remarkable athlete, and together they
occupy 3 0 minutes of hilarious laughs
and most astounding bumps

Just a little bit better than the week
previous. If ho keeps on he will be
giving the patrons a Broadway produc
tion for nothing.
But It is not alone the delightful
shows put on by the Allen Curtis com
pany that have attracted the crowds to
the park this year. The average enter
tainments of the preat nmusement re
sort have been far better than in pre
vious years. The delightful spot
among the overhanging "nk trees has
been the favorite picnic gro.unds of the
year. The attractions hne been of the
kind that ternpt and lure one from the
staidness of conventional life, and
Portlanders are growing more and more
accustomed to taking advantage of the
clean and healthy amusements which
the Oaks management has prepared for
them. The proof of all this Is found
In the fact that the oaks attendance
this year has been far in excess or any
previous season.
Here are a few of the musical hits
to be heard this week In the Atrdome:
"A Lemon In the Garden of Lovp," I've
Taken Quite a Fancy to You," ' pride of
the Prairie," "A Rare Old Bird.'' "Just
Because He Couldn't Sing." "Love Me
and thu World Is- Mine," 'Insanity,''
"What's the Use of Dreaming?" "Every

"The Confessions of a Wife."
