work. My outfit now consisted of four
men besides my servant, an Indian
woman for cook, and two canoes or
ubas, aa they are called In this country.
"We left a little place known as
Iraca and went down tho Aria re river
for a Journey lasting four days. The
Arlare rises In the plain of Fuslganlgti,
which la Just south of Mogota, and Is a
great tributary of the Ouavlarle. coming
in from the north. At tho end of the
four days' Journey we arrived at the
point where the Arlare empties Into the
uuavlarle. which up to this point is
known as tho Oiiaynbero. It was while
we were making our way down this
stream that we encountered a large
macarel, which wub making its wy
across the river. This Is one of the
most venomous and dreaded snakes In
Colombia. Tho reptile, which was
about eight feet in length, and more
than a foot In thickness, tried to board
the canoe, as they Invariably do under
similar circumstances As luck would
have It the guns and machetes w-re out
of reach In the stem of the leiat with
the provisions, and with a !,eai!y loaded
and ticklish canoe in the middle of a
river v.-It It an unusually swift current

"The girls are married very young,
and bear from two to six children, and
It Is a curious tact that the discom

betakes herself to the forest. from
whence sue appears a few hours later

70 to 100 feet In length, 45 to 05 foot In

musical instruments belonging to the
family are placed. These spaces arn not
In any way divided from each other be
yond the natural divisions of the upright
posts, on which rests the structure.
