terestlng and unique fondles of men
ever brought together In the country.
For the most part they are men of a
hlKh order of Intelligence and with ed
ucations acquli'd In some of the lust
schools and colleges In the 1 nlted
Slates. Such a man Is Captain Elliott,
whom we met at Lake Tahoe. Such a
man Is Mr. Hopping, who is still with
us, having come down the mountain
from Camp Sierra. Such a man Is Col
onel Shlrin, who is In charge of the big
forest which stietches lor miles to the
south of us and comprises more l'an
1,600 OOu acres. Such a man Is Captain
Adams, chief of all the rangers, and
next In rank In the forest service to
GIfford I'lnchot. the official head of the
whole system.
The assertion that "Plnehot has a lot
of paper collared dudes doing the work
of foresters and mountaineers" Is not
supported by the facta as we harve been
able to get them. Hopping was born
and raised In this vicinity. His father
and all his relatives were of the old
colony that built the great mountain
road which leads up to Camp Sierra and
the center of the Big Trees. Captain
Redwood Is a son or the secretary of
the same colony, and his father still
lives about midway down the mountain.
Captain Elliott has spent the greater
part of his life In the forest where lie
now has charge. Colonel Shlnn Is of
the west, and has Been two generations
come and go since he first began to live
In the mountains and to study the for
ests and their proper rare.
Captain Aflame.
Captain Adams has had a most pictur
esque career. Although next in rank
and honor In the service to Mr. Plnehot,
he had a long and hard apprenticeship
before acquiring the place. He was n
soldier In the war with Spain and
served In Cuba and the Philippines. Be
fore that he sailed before the mast aud
always he has been accustomed to out
door life. His duties keep him In Wash
ington during the winter months, and
he spends all of his Bummers in the
mountains.
The salaries paid In the forest serv
ice are so small comparatively ranging
from $1,200 to $2,700 a year and the
expense of keeping the necessary horses
so great, with the lonely life led by tho
men. that it would seem Impossible to
gather together such men as are really
found In tho service. Almost without
exception the chief foresters and super-
visors and district rangers, are men J
with college educations. They are men
who love the trees and the mountains
of witter dow n t lie uitren like a HHiUll

for safety on the other side. It would
be a story of how the women wives
of mountaineers an 1 forest service peo
ple came from villages nnd mountain
hamlets and spent the nights and duvs
of the 64 hours on the mountain sides
making coffee and serving food and
wetting down sacks and making camp
comfortable' for the fire fighters.
1 was with the men when they came
out. Not a man but had his hair and
eyebrows and mustache or w lilseUes
singed close to his head. Not one but
whoso eyes were bloodshot and whose
steps were weary and walk uncertain.
Not a man who had a whole boot or
shoo on his foot or a whole uhlrt on
hi b back. Half a dozen of them In the
early stages of the fire fighting and
before supplies came up fought the fire
with their shirt in one hand an under
shirt In the other, stripped to the waist,
and these were cruelly burned. Not a
soldier of the two score escaped with
it semblance of his uniform on his back.
IVizens of the men descended the moun
tain side to the power plant and threw
themselves o:i the ground to spend 12
hours in sleep of utter exhaustion. But
thero was no word of complaint.

MARRIAGE LICENSES
AFEICAN MAIMMAGE
Fixing the Social Status of tho Rrido
Question of Dowry.
From the London Standard.
The marriage customs of west and
southwest Africa are in many cases pe
culiar. They differ, of course, In differ
ent tribes, but have broad lines In com
mon. A coastal tribe always considers Itself
superior to tin inland tribe, and even Its
meanest member claims to rank higher
than the most powerful man of an up
country tribe. A man may marry any
woman he likes of any tribe, It being
held that he gives her his own status,
whatever that may be, but It is almost
unheard of for u. woman to marry "bo
heath1' lier. As a result Home of the
women of tho moat euoerior coast tribes
In talking with them I found most of like the Mpongwe look to marriara with

doing much for the progress of the The parents on both sides rule abso-
world and for the preservation of re- 1 lutely In tho matter of marrlasro be-
sources for coming generations, which
will make them famed in the futuro
hlstorv of the republic, though but lit
tle appreciated now. These men are
lust like Glfford Plnehot, back Jn Wash
ington. For the most part they could
take their e&so and find congenial em
ployment elsewhere, but their love for
the woods and the great open mountain
spaces and their conviction that work
we done now In the preservation of the
great forests will mean much for the
future will hold them to their lives
of hardship and toll.
How They Drees. -Without
exception they wear the dark
preen and picturesque khaki of the serv
ice, and there is naught to distinguish
the relative rank of the men. They
nrldo themselves on their horses and
(heir equipment. They usually have
two horses and sometimes two horses
and a pack animal. I saw Captain Red
wood ride away, out of Camp Sierra,
with his rifle under his saddle pommel,
a pack horse carrying provisions for
six weeks, and a blanket roll In which
he may sleep at night, and simple cook
ing u'enslis with which he may cook.
He has a tiny mite of a baby, only
3 days old. born up there under the big
trees in Camp Sierra, and It seemed al-moi-t
pathetic to see him ride away,
leaving the anxious mother and tho new
born baby looking after him from un
der the? edge of the raised tent flap. He
wlil be gone for weeks. Each day he
will climb mountain sides and descend
into deep canyons and gorges. Kach
day he will keep his eyes constantly on
the sky line to detect signs of the -light
gray and blue haze which rises toward
the sky when there is a forest fire.
Many days he will ride from 60 to 80
miles.
Most lumbermen and mnuntnlneeri
will tell you that tiie forest service more
than pays for itself In the way in whioh
it saves tl.r- destruction of trees and
properly from the forest fires. I hail
an opportunity the other day to see how
the rangers work and what grim and
desperate duty uiey do up here In tho
