R
' Considerable comment has been beard
on the streets today relaelve to the,
threatened reduction of the committee
named last week to escort the three
Oregon athletes, Hmlthson, Gilbert and
Kelly, from New York to Portland, with
much adverse sentiment. "The action
of the g-eneral committee meeting last
night, with few delegates In attendance,
of referring the selection of the-one or
two delegates to Chairman Morrison,
and Messrs. Kwlng and Devers, has
been criticised to considerable extent.
More than one prominent clubman
and business man ban expressed the
opinion that Portland's reputation Is
In Jeopardy at the sudden turn Of af
fairs. They argue that special effort
should be put forth to keep the original
committee named at last week's meet
ing Intact or else abolish the plan of
sending a committee east entirely. Thl
would permit the local committee to
concentrate Its efforts on the Portland
end of the entertainment.
The Information has been scattered
broadcast over the continent that A
fommlttee of three newspaper men had
been selected to exploit Oregon in con
nection with the entertainment of the
three athletos in their Journey across,
i..e country. They contend that one
press man and his little grip will excite
no curiosity in the big rltleH of the
east. J ney doubt seriously If that one
man will be ahlo to affiliate with the
eastern newspaper men. good fellow
ship being a prime essential among the
bohemlanism of several of the eastern
cities to be visited, notably New York.
They rtoiy.t further that Insufficient rep
resentation-will be considered seriously
in the metropolis.
XaUy May Decline.
Just whut writer the new committee
will select is problematical. It is said
a majority of the members will Insist
on the one whom they appointed several
weeks ai;n. .Should such be the case
there Is likely 10 be an Interesting mo
ment when sal.! delegate and Dan Kellv
meet in New York. Kelly's heart. still
rankles with the unjust criticism heaped
upon mm on nis trip across the conti
nent to 7mestown lust year. It Is bare
ly possible that the fair-haired lad from
Baker City will turn down the commit
tee's Invitation to a triumphal entry
to his home state.
J.'nless there can he a harmonious
meeting of athletes nnd escorting com
mittee, tho local business men feel that
no committee should be sent, but that
the athletes should be brought across
the continent at their own leisure and
then given such a royal reception and
entertainment as the funds now In hand
will permit. The hoys found their way
to New York alone, the men say, and
they are eminently capable of returning
to Oregon unattended.

Champion Is Confident
Beating Illinois Man in
Los Angeles Fight.
6an Francisco, Aug. 21. That he will
have the fight of his life with I'apke
In Los Angeles Is the opinion of Ptnn
ley Ketchel, the middle-weight champion
of the world.
Ketchel was asked today whom he
considers the toughest fellow he ever
met In the ring.
"It rests between Thomas and I'apke,"
he answered without any hesitation.
"That 32-round bout I had with Thomas
was certainly hard to win. but I'apke
proved himself equally hard In the 10
round bout In Milwaukee If he stays
for a long fight as hard as he, stayed
for that 10 rounds be will give me n
hard time. Ml find that out soon."

In the event, the fans declare the mill
wl!' not be a one-sided affair.
The 20-round battle between Montana

bv the fans on the outcome of this event
Is how long Montana Kid will be per
