III EGG MARKET
r-
Iteceipts of Select Quality
Arc Small .Veal Show
ing a Jjoss in Price.
Wholesale market features:
Euk market stiffening.
Cheese looks higher.
Peach supplies very heavy.
Best tomatoes aro higher.
Olive market very stiff.
Grapes show Improved iunllty.
Dressed venl not so firm.
Denver celery In good shops,
ftlver smell coming again.
Signs of (train activity.
Egg Market la Stiffening.
While nuotatlons in eentral are un
changed for the day, there Is a some
what sttffer tone In the local egg mar
ket. Inquiries for supplies are Increas
ing, both fTom home merchants and
from the north anil this Is causing
many to nsk and receive the higher fig
ure quoted. Sales to the northern cit
ies have been made on quotations given
Buurday. which was then at 24o, but
II la unlikely that" any new business
would be accepted by locnl sellers un-
'Jer Z6c.
Small ArrlvaJa of Good arc.
Just at the moment arrivals of eggs
are quite fair along the street, consider
ing the period of the year; but among
the number of arrivals few are of best
quality. This Is causing most of the
trade to discriminate against the poorer
quality Mid It will pay shippers to see
lhat their supplies arrive in better
shape. Hastem eggs now being offered
are generally of good quality because
of the very careful candling but they
nre not near as rood as the best of local
because of the time lost en route.
Dressed Veal Not ao Aotlvi.
Because of the heavier arrivals of
dressed veal in the Front street mar
kets during th past 24 hours, receivers
experienced much more difficulty In
getting rid of supplies that come espe
cially at the prices formerly quoted and
In almost every instance a lower range
of values was established for the time
being. Best venl sold around 8c a
pouno, although in a row instances as
high as SVic was obtained for some-
- thing select In quality. Poor quality
sold as low as Ke a pound. Shippers
need to he very careful during the
heated period In making shipments of
pressed meats.
Dressed hogs are Arriving quite slow
ly and for them the price along the
street la still maintained at former fig
ures. Cheese Looking Klarner.
With cream supplies very scant, ow
ing to the protrated hot weather, the
make of cheese decreasing fast and
the market la disposed to show firm
ness. Borne sales are reported to the
northern cities around current quota
tions. From Tillamook comes the re
port that but a few scattered small lots
are still offered on the market Quo
tations at primary points are held very
stiff in consequence and the present In
dications are not for advanced values
Butter supplies continue much under
the current demand and while values
are still showing no change from Inst
week, the market is Inclined to advance.
Beat Tomatoes Ara Hlarber.
First class quality tomatoes are
showing an advance In price, owing to
the very small amount of stock offered.
Some from California is bringing as
high as J1.2S, as does some of the best
local stork. Generally the market ranges
around SI. Advices from the country
state that the vines are covered with
green tomatoes of very good size but
the stock Is ripening very slowly. All
express the opinion that this Is an off
year for tomatoes.
Brief Notes of the Trade.
Dullness continues In the hop market
with no business of Importance passing!
In any section of the world at the mo
ment. Peach supplies along Front street are
very liberal with some sales of Hale s
Karly around 60c. Karly Crawfords
from eastern Oregon are selling from 6o
to 75c, according to quality, but thus
far the quality has not been of the best.
Fome Elbertas from the south are sell
ing as high as 85c a box.
Thus far this season there has been
a great Increase of fresh fig shipments
from California to the Portland market.
Most of the shipments have been made
as a sort of experiment because this
market has never consumed any great
quantity of the fruit In previous years.
Quotations ranging around $1.25 and
J 1 .50 a box.
Celery from Denver Is arriving In
quite good shape and is finding a de
mand around 90c a dosen. Some from
Olympia selling from 76c to that fig
ure.
Cantaloupe market Is down with much
larger supplies offering from local
points. Quotations go no higher than
12 a crate and range down to 1 150 for
good stock.
Advices from California state that the
olive crop is sure to be greatly de
creased owing to the ravages of an Insect.
Front street sells at the following

Portland Union Stockyards. Aug. 18.
The absence of sheep In the yards since
last Saturday lias aided the market, al
though there Is no change in value for
the day In fact none in that line for
a week. However, the disposition of
the market Is to become harder and
it will therefore be easier to handle ar
rivals when they do come.
Hogs are quoted very firm In the
yards today following the advance of
beet stuff to $; yesterday. Receipts for
the 24 hours were fair for this time of
year, but demand is growing so fast
that the trade could easily absorb twloe
as many as now coming and not affect
the market value to any extent. Hog
values are fast reaching for the high
market In the Pacific northwest, be
cause of the very small offerings, and
It will not be long before the top is
reached.
With the erection of the new Swift
plant as weJl as a new and modern one
for 8ch wartzschlld & Sulzburgr, the trade
territory of Portland for hoc nroducts
as wen a in otner lines will be greatly
extended. In fact the large part of the
Increased business will be new busi
ness fur the Pacific northwest, which
has heretofore been going to the eastern
irane.
Report of Individual Salea.
A feature of general interest to the
livestock growers Is the agitation for
the reporting of Individual sale prices
ny tne sellers. it is unite likely that
the new system will soon be put Into
effect, apd tnen shippers will know ex
actly what each Individual animal haa
brought In the market Instead of lump
ing ine snipment ns a wtioie.
Cattle are Quoted firm following the
advance of 25c yesterday, but no change
in value is shown today. Receipts con
tlnue very small, and far under the1
actual requirements of the trade.
A" year ago today hogs were weak,
cattle steady to strong, and sheep
steady, with no change In values for
the day.
Official yard values today:
