With personalities entirely unlike but
with careers so closely linked that it is
easier to review ttietr early engage
ments as a "team" than Individually,
Misses Melville and Stetson present in
teresting subjects.
In the early days of variety, as vau
deville wan railed, this team wan un
questionably the foremost duo of women
In the field. No artists were more pop
ular than they during the many sea
sons they headed the famous Howard
Athenaeum company, which toured from
Maine to California.
Both these popular comediennes be
gan in the dramatic field. Miss Stetson
wanted the heavy parts and thought she
was destined to become a tragedienne,
ljut fate willed It otherwise and she be
came recognized for her Inimitable wit
and natural comedy. For several sea
sons Miss Melville was a member of the
McKee Rankin California theatre stock
. company, an organization which then
Included Louis James, Lewis Morrison, ,
Blanche alsh and others. She had a
repertoire of 34 operas which she ap
peared in with the Blanco Opera com
pany. Chnrmlngly gracious and easy in
manner with the gift of adapting them
selves readily to the characteristics of
those whom they meet, vivacious, witty
and almost fascinatingly entertaining
at all times, accounts for these artistes
long and constant vogue.
With burnt eork make-ups the two
comedians, Clifford and Burke, are gen
. ulnely funny, and all their dialogue and
songs are original and new. In a way
they suggest those quaint colored com
edians Williams and Walker, and their
characterizations are so clever that they
often are mistaken for real colored peo
ple. They are already very popular
with Orpheum patrons, as this Is their
third tour In the west.
. Orals' prodigies or Simian comedians,
consists of a troupe of trained monkeys
and baboons doing everything but talk.
It Is a. marvelous and striking exam
ple of nigh perfection In animal train
ing. The credit goes to Herr (1. Grais.
whose fame is world renowned, and
who has assemble?) a troup of nenr-hu-rr.ans
babboons and who has given them
an education that is phenomenal. His
"Diavo Leno Looping the Ixiop, is re
markable. "The Bachelor and the Maid" Is the
title of a delightful musical skit pre
sented by Wilbur Mark assisted by Miss
Nella Walker Miss Walker Is a very
Charming actress as well as a talented
vocalist, and Mr. Mack Is a particularly
Clever comedian who sings a number of
tongs of his own composition, among
them being "Mandv I Ixive You." "Now
Just Suppose," and "I've Been Told."
Miss Sadie Sherman, who has been In
vaudeville less than five months, la al
ready a prime favorite with her audi
ences, and her engagements date for a
year ahead, the. will be seen here In a
clever Httle' novelty called "At the Pho
tographer:" in which she Imitates a
fond mother with a crying baby, a gig
gling school girl and a fussv old lady
at the gallerv. Miss Sherman also sings
a number of catchy coon songs which
always wins her hearers.
Zero. Jordan and wi ir Known as
the "Wliards of the Air.'" and they are
certainly tha most wonderful trio doing
aerial work. Skill and. daring seem to
be Mended. During their act the faces
of the spectators at first wear an ex
pression of nervous alarm lest an acci
dent should happen, but the accuracy
with which thev rnaka their flvs
through the air Infuses a spirit of Con
fidence Into the au Hence and enables
there to enjoy th turn as it certainly
ieserve.
Fred Bond and Kiss Fremont Benton
with their com pan y will present a mer
ry little corned entitled "Handkerchief
Number Jl." JsTr. Bond lias had a ca
reer tn the dramaile and comedy field
both as a player and as stage manager,
and many actors and actresses now
ttlar tat America owe their first suo-
cesses and present prominence to him
Perhaps the one most Important of
these is Miss Frances Starr, the young
est of the Relasco stars, who has Just
closed her most brilliant season in "The
Rosa of the Rancho."
For the last few years Mr. Bond has
been featured in the Shuhert produc
tions at the New York Casino, and this
present tour Is his first in many years
in vaudeville.
Miss Benton Is an attractive foil for
the famous comedian and in the east
she is considered one of the most prom
lwinir of American comediennes.
The Orpheum moving pictures show
the latest in motlWh photography.
At the Grand.
This week Sullivan & Considine are
sending to the Grand a vaudeville en
tertainment of the highest type. The
bill wftl be found full of novelties, with
excellent musical numbers and a larg
amount of comedy and cheerful enter- (
tainment. The headline act will be
James and Elsie Finney In whet Is con
sidered the most remarkable aquatic
specialty In vaudeville. These people
are champion swimmers and appear In
a large crystal tank, containing several
hundred gallons of water. It is the
only net of Its kind that has been seen
in the west. James Finney does all
sorts of feats under water and so does
his wife. They eat and sleep beneath
the waves and Finney even smokes. He
remains under water two minutes and
more, establishing a record Which no
other swimmer has ever equaled. To
all who delight In novelties and In the
sport of swimming, the act of the Fln
neys will be found of especial Interest.
Jules Garrison and company will pre
sent their famous act, "The Modern Ro
man." This is a mixture of burlesque and
travesty and will be found one of the
most side-splitting acts that hve been
sent to the Pacific coast by any circuit.
There Is a laugh every minute when the
Garrisons are working. The Pantzer
Trio have a novelty. It Is a gymnastic
comedy with some of the most daring
and sensational gymnastic stunts gar
nished with merriment.
Llnstrum and Anderson are comedy
acrobats, but their work Is entirely dif
ferent from that of the acrobatic trio
heretofore mentioned. The act is swift
and snappy and will be well worth

The Oaks "Chow Chow."
According to popular belief Chow
Chow Is something that is intended to
sustain the inner man. Commencing
Monday night, however, the Allen Cur
tis Comedy company is going to demon
strate In the big free airdome at the
Oaks that Chow Chow is something to
make you laugh. The Allen Curtis com
pany Is now presenting its twelfth week
of very creditable comedy at the Oaks
and this week the presentation will be
something that will be out of tha ordinary.
Chow Chow, according to the defini
tion of the Allen Curtis company is a
mixture of mirth and melody. Every
thing happens in a doctor shop, where a
man of Hebraic ancestry Is left in
charge for a short time. As soon as
this happens every one begins to have
various ailments and straightway make
for the doctor shop. The treatments
handed out convulse not only the pa
tients but the audience as well. New
costumes and new songs and dances
will add to the attractiveness of th
piece. Among the song numbers which
are said to make hits are:
"Down in Jungle Town" bv Leonard,
"In Castilia" by La Ponte, "Automobil-
ing" by Greene, "Glow Worm" by La
Ponte, "I Know a Girl Like Y'ou" by
Leonard. Caston. Greene and Prager.
