Howe, a young clerk in the office
of the county treasurer, was set up

ing and is dying at St. John'B hos
pital. Howe was atackerl by the ne

home. They fired upon him and he
fled, but they puraufd, shooting as
thpy ran until ho fell. The negroes
then searched hln pockets taking a
diamond ring from his finger, a dia
mond shirt stud and all his money
and valuables. !owo was found ly
ing where he was shot and hurried
to the hospital.
The known casualties of last
night's rioting:
Scott Burton, a saloon porter;
hanged to a tree by tho mob.
T. J. Scott, aged bystander; shot
In back and killed.
Louis Johnson, 17; found dead,
phot through the abdomen, after the
attack on Loper's restaurant.
Thomas Foley, 40; shot through
the abdomen, condition critical.
Unknown man; shot above heart,
dying in hospital.
James Hayes, bystander; shot by
Hunter, seriously injured.
V. M. Dowfl, young clerk; dying
from being shot down by negroes,
who" then robbed him.
At least five fatally wounded by
volley fired Into mob by soldiers.
No less than 50 Injured more or
less seriously during the night's
rioting.
One of the largest' suburban land
deals of tho year was completed
this morning when 67 acres adjoin
ing Hose City Park on the south
were transferred to Hilton, Dodds &
Campbell, a newly organized firm,
by Hartman & Thompson. The con
sideration was about $200,000, most
of which was outside capital.
The new addition la to bo known as
Elmhurst, Tho laud is now being- sur
veyed and platted. When cut up Into
city lots about 400 lots for homes will
bo available. The new addition Is about
one mile from the Portland Country club
property, and la to have a thoroughfare
running through It wTttch will lead di
rectly to the home of the organization
which le now making such extensive Im
provements. C. li. Dodds. one of the men Interest
ed In Elmhurst, Is well known in Port- I
land, having been connected with the I
real ostnte firm of Hartman & Thomp
son for many years.
Prank K. Hilton, another member of
the Elinhur.st addition flrpa, is from Cal
ifornia, having formerly 'been In tho
banking business in Sun Diego. Mr. 1111
ton Is tilso experienced In the real es
tate business and at oy.e time was en
gaged In the timber traile.
Omaha Capitalist.
Floyd .1. Campbell, the other member
of the new firm, comes to Portland
from Omaha -He was formerly in the
grain business In St. Louis. .Minneapo
lis and other eastern cities.
The office of Hilton, Dodds & Camp
bell is to be located ia the new Commer
cial Club building.
Tho new suburban district Is to be
made one of the most attractlvo In the
city. This will be done by means of
trees and streets and other Improve
ments which are to begin at once. The

have locked horns over the recent pro
posal to give to the former organization

When it was discovered, after the de
parture of the Atlantic fleet, that sev
eral thousand dollars was left in Die
