'-My Answer to All Calum

T. M Stevens, the missing head of tha
Portland Rice Milling company, and his,
bride, Lillian Stevi ns. nee Monk, re
turned to the Madison Park apartments
last night, and Mr. Sievens was at hie
office In the Commonwealth bulldlntC
this morning. Excepting to enter a gen
eral denial of the charges bf bigamy
and cruelty mode against him, and to
characterize the charges as calumnies,
Mr. 8tevns said he" did not wish tr)
make any statement to the newspapers.
At least until the return of Judge
O'Day tomorrow afternoon, no criminal
charges" will be brought against Mr.
Htevens. Judge ())ay. who Is Mr.
Stevens' attorney, is at Seaside.
W-hat Mr. Stevens wanted said is
tliis:
'Mr answer to all the calumnies that
have been uttered against me will ha
made through the courts, at the proper
time and the proper place."
The return of the Stevens this morn
ing probably saved their apartment
from a raid by the sheriff. Disgusted
at securing only J204 in their attempts
to levy (oi his bank balances and sal
ary, the deputies had planned to go to
the Stevens flat In the Madison Park
apartments this morning and see If
they couldn't find the bride, and groom
In hiding there. Hearing of this plan
the manager of the apartments hurried
around to a notary yesterdav afternoon
and took affidavit that the Steveni
were not In their flat, and had not been
seen In the apartment house since the
trouble began. To all itiepilrers the
manager flaunted this affidavit as proof
that his assertions of the past week
had been correct.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Stevens appearei!
to be cheerful and happy this morning
In tho face of tho sensation their mar
riage has caused. Mrs. Stevens said
that her lawyers would speak for her
later on and referred everybody to her
husband.
Mr Stevens was also In good spirits.
He was dressed In a new blue suit, had
just nui a snave and wore a big dia
mond pin in his white tie. Ho looked
considerably better than he did 10 days
ago. prior to the announcement of his
marriage to Lillian Monk.
I don't wis to flcht mv case out In
the newspapers." said Mr. Stevens. "The
other side has done enough of that. Alt
I wish to say Is that my answer to all
these calumnies will be made through
the courts, and at the proper time and
place."
He said he did not wish to discuss his
future plans, nor where he and Mrs.
Stevens had been, nor where thev in
tended living "T want the matter
dropped.' said he. "until it comes up in
the courts "
Prior to her mirrlag to Mr. SteyenS
Miss Monk lived with Mr and Mrs.
Joseph Taylor at TL'ii Kearney street,
and she whs at this house until the time
of the marriage Mrs Tavlor stated
this morrlng that If the Stevens wer
married at her home ,IP didn't know It
fnd said that she had been away and
so knew nothing concerning the move- .
