Sacramento, Cal., Aug. 13. Comment
was excited In the state board of edu
cation today by the report of State Su
perintendent of Public Instruction
Hyatt In which he gives figures to show
that there is an alarming decrease in
the number of high school children in
the first to fourth years.
The statistics are for the year 1907
and li'OS and are based on the attend
ance ail over tho Mtate. It Is shown
that out of a total registration of
7.079 boys and 7.Sfi3 girls in the high
schools for the first year course there
are only 1,425 boys and 2,276 girls In
the senior grade.
This means that between the first
and fourth years 5,654 boys and 5.577
girls have dropped their high school
work.
Superintendent Hyatt declares tint
the proper remedy fur this condition i.
to offer a more varied course of studies
In the high schools.
