men, passed away at his home In this
city Friday morning at 7 o'clock.
Mr. Wlmberly wis born on a planta
tion In Mississippi, April ifi is;in with
the spirit of adventure whh h filled the
early pioneers, he came to the Willam
ette valley In 1846 when a boy of but
lfi. driving an ox team nemly the entire
distance across the plains, a Journey
of about six months. Hettllng about six
miles east of Salem, he, two years later,
enlisted as a volunteer In a campaign
against the Cayuse Indians, who were
then on a warpath In the VValla Walla
valley. He returned In 1S48, and after
remaining at his home about n year he
went overland to California, being lured
bv the gold mining lover that was then
raging. Glckrning In the Intense sum
mer hrnt of California, lie returned
home a few months later by sea. It tak
ing 61 days to make, tho voyage to the
mouth of the Columbia river.
He came to Douglas county in 1864.
and located on a government claim nea
Glide. In the yer DiR6 he again en
listed as a volunteer In the wars with
the Indians of southern Oregon. .Sep
tember 3, 1857, he married Miss Nancy
A. Marks, who came to Oregon from 1111
lnols four years previous, and who now
survives him, she being at this time
past 70 years of age. Their golden wed
ding anniversary was held lust September.
For the past 20 years the family has
resided In thin city. K. Wlmberly. his
son. Is editor and publisher of the Hose
burg Review. The other surviving
members of the family are: Ira Wlm
berly, the mayor of raln; Elmer K
