The City of Testa.
A notable feature at North Beach this
year la the great increase in the number
or campers, un me strip or iana wnicn
lays between Long; Beach and Seavlew
and back of the cottage, hundreds of
in
families are anendlnc the summer
tenia The oauiD around la shaded and
protected by trees and some of the
places look very piotureaque. It Is an
easy matter to get water and most of
the camps are supplied with driven
wells. There Is any quantity or drift
wood on the beach and tlie camper's
mall boy haa an exhauatless satires of
supply for the kitchen wood box. Raxor
clams are plentiful on the beach now
and every tent haa its snare. Agents
from the grooery stores make the
rounds of the tenta every morning and
tho old custom of bringing a season a
utock of provisions haa been done away
with. At night the camps are lighted
by campflres and Chinese lanterns hang
from the trees. In this canvas city
there is a enlrlt of democracy. The tent
dwollers come to the beach for an out
ing of rest and oomrort, liiey oaine
In the surf, fish on the Rocks and pick
berrloa In the hills. They are up early
In tha mornlni after shellfish ana ready
at night for any amusement from the
camp rlre to tna aance in ins oia nau.
The dress of the camper is simple. The
most atriklna- feature Is the soft straw
hat with the red bandana band which Is
seen on both men and women. At the
postofftce, the bowling alley and the
station the camper In always found, t lie
happiest on the beach.
Clam Bake.
Ona nf the most striking social even's
that hps ever taken place at North
Beach was the oyster bake given Sat-
i-rtn.r nlhl In T3riiker tiflrlf hv Georore
Boschke.. chief engineer of the lYarrlman
linen In tlreron. over eu guests en-
oyert Mr. Boschke s nospuaniy una inq
1st Included names from every part of
the hnnoh. A large oonrire Durnea in
the center of the park and Chinese la.n
terna were hung from the trees. Par
sons' orchestra furnished music during
the supper. The guests were seated at
ong tables wnicn were duui ior inc
occasion. The oysters were baked on
the fire In tho center in true old New
England style and served at the tables.
A striking feature of the evening was
the appearance of the Jovial host In a
hieh cook's cap and white apron. In
this attire he supervised the conking
of the oysters with as much minuteness
as he does the construction of a Harrl
man railroad. After the oyster bake
the guests retired to the ballroom at the
Hotel Breakers and finished the even
ing with dancing.
