COST OF COURT
PRESENTATIONS
Th averaga young lady movInK In

In very many cases tills averaK young
lJy has her dreum realized, says Pear-

Let lis then suppose that such a liuJv
hat been able to satisfy tlie court of
flclala with her credential!). Hue event
ful day the Invitation arrives with full
regulations and Instructions as to the
xact type of costume to he worn. Thi n
the fun. or otherwise. begins. Tin- c-

for It Is Impossible to bo present. -.1 at
court without incurring considerably
heavy outlays
A good aVal of Ignorance, however.,
prevails concerning the exact cost In
volved In being presented. For exampioj
there are those who seem to believe !
that the cost Is ruinous. I
Well, It can be made exceptionally .
heavy If the parents of the debutante
o choose, but In reality It does not
rnnlrA tn r-iin no a verv hlnh figure.
A costume may cost just what the
lady Involved pleases. She may pay us
much as $4,000 for It. or her expendi
ture may be as low as $126. It nil de
pends on whether everything Is supplied
from outside, or If a portion of the
outfit la turned out by servants In the
employ of the debutante's parents.
If one strikes Jin average, It may he
aet down that the costume of the de
butantes at anv given court run to ,
about $800' each, which means that.
while the Hon. Miss So-and-So s costume
cost $760, the price of plain little Mis
Smith's presentation robe, was merely
$250. . ,
The latter might he spent, somewhat
after this fashion: Costume, say. $11:..:
satin shoes, silk stockings and under
clothing, together with a few othi r
necessaries saw $100. In a case like
this, the train would almost require to
be got on loan from one of the estab
lishments that do business In that wav,
onH fhim smother two or three pounds
would be snent. The hairdresser would VoN
nwinlre to have his fee. and thus w.
come close on the $i 50 mentioned above, j son.

IU:R WKKTH-July 2o, to Mr.
nd Mrs. Albert A on der Werth. city,
nslnce On her arrival she is ushered
Into a room, where she is inspected by
a court official, whose duty it Is tn
make certain that each debutante is
Pressed according to regulation ere slo
ts moved on to the throne room.
in the course of time it sometimes
seems years to the debutante the na
tional anth.m strikes on the ears .of the
eiclted -young lady, and she then sees
her companions, one by one. disappear
as thev are summoned before the kine.
She "knows what she has to do; at
any rate, she did know before she left
home. But manv a youthful debutante
Is hardly cognizant of her actions In
her excitement, and when her name Is
ultimately called out she arises and fol
lows the gentleman usher Just as she
has seen the others do.
On her way to the presence the de
butante sees certain gorgeous figures
dimlv. and then the throne room is
reached, and her train, which has been
carefully carried up to this point, is let
down. Next minute an official clearly
announces her name, and also that of
the lady who is presenting her, and ere
the excited girl knows what is happen
ing she is alone in front of the king
and queen.
She curtesies as well as she can to
the monarch, then to the queen, and If
any princes or princesses are present
she bows to each. Of course she kisses
the monarch's hand, and then glides
away as carefully as her scattered wits
will allow.
Now, in retiring from the presence,
she must on no account turn her back
on the throne. There is a peculiar
gliding step which must be employed,
and all the time the train must he
skillfully manipulated. Hack she goes,
till she reaches a door, where an official
in. waiting whips her train over her
shoulder, and she now looks after her
self, for the presentation is entirely
over and quite a thing of the past.
The court, as a rule, begins at 10
o'clock, but it is usually midnight ere
a move is made toward the supper j
rooms, where, however, the king ajid
queen never appear, as they have their
repast alone or in the company of a
few chosen friends.
After supper the debutante leaves th9
palacjr sometimes highly delighted with
herFfrf and sometimes sadly disappoint
ed, for quite a number of debutantes
have a feeling, after the whole thing is
over, that they have never seen the
king and queen at all. It is true they
were conscious or people sitting
glare of light, and po on, but no.
are not quite sure Just who these
pie were, or whether the king
quee.n were among them.
However, these self-same ladles
their names In the papers the.
morning. After this assurance they be
gin to feel that they must have Deen
presented right enough, even though the
remembrance is a somewhat hazy oiij.
