Under Last Year.
Because of th general feeling of un
rest regarding Oregon's wheat crop this
year, The Journal has detailed Hyman
H. Cohen to make an exhaustive Invest!
gatlon Into crop conditions. His articles
will deal with probable wheat yields In
the different section of the state, and
the causes which have combined to ef
foot Increases or decreases in production.

Athena, Or.. Aug. 6. With fall sown
wheat on the reservation going as high
as 85 bushels to the acre and an average
yield somewhere around 26 bushels,
there is no cause to complain of this
year's wheat crop In this part or Uma
tilla county.
While the crop will not reach the pro
ductlon of a year ago, the yield Is so
much better than expected a few weeks
ago that there Is general rejoicing
among the producers as well as the
merchants.
Money for Growers.
With wheat going on an average of
25 bushels to the acre and the price
going as fast toward the dollar mark a
competition can put it, there will be
more money in wheat-growing here than
ever.
A feature of speclil interest to grow
ers this season Is the small height
which the wheat attained. This is due
entirely to the lack of sufficient mols
' ture and not to any deficiency In soli
nualltv. The wheat throughout this
portion of eastern Oregon Is not mora
than two thirds the height of last sea
' son.
Umatilla's No. 1 Wieat.
This condition does not affect the
quality of the grain, for lately received
samples at warehouses show the wheat
in ranirn hfltwppn 67 and 60 pounds to
the bushel not a few topping the scales
at the latter figure. This will put most
of Umatilla's wheat In the No. 1 grade,
nnd this section will be one of the few
In the state to produce this quality of
Harvest is now on in full swing and
as the cut progresses the returns grow
better.

Late in the afternoon the officers of
the Third Oregon made a formal call
upon General Brush at brigade head

ing, every officer of the Third was pres

One of the manv humorous Incidents
of camp life occurred yesterday morn
ing when Lieutenant White, battalion
adjutant of the First battalion. Fourth
regiment, received for the first ttme
his mount. It appears that the horse
was secured from a Portland Riding
academy, where he had been used as a
hurdle horse, and his education had
been given with the vise of a bugle.
When the lieutenant first mounted the
horse appeared as docile as a truck
horse, but a moment later , a bugle
sounded, and taking that for a signal
he attempted to hurdle the first ob
stacle in slKht. It chanced to be one
of the headquarters tents, and in u
moment the animal as well as his rider
was sadly entangled in the tent ropes.
From this he went to another, and fin
ally bolted down the company street
and across toward the parade ground.
Here the battle was fought out between
horse and rider, and a few minutes later
they returned for duty with the rider

of deer have been made in the moun
tains of Lane county, and Judging from
first returns deer are not plentiful In
the Cascades. Nearly every party, how
ever, report that there appears to be an
abundance of does and fawns. On the
south fork of the McKenzle, Jim
effrles famed hunting ground, one
arty found only two bucks on a 1 tr
ays' trio, but saw over 80 does, most
of which were with fawns.
