Western railroads huve determined to
contest In the courts the decision of the
interstate commerce commission In the
new famous lumber rate cases. This
cecislun was riiched after several con
ferences held in the office of J. C.
Stubbs. traflic director for the Harrl

The decision of the commission is said
to be a "straddle" ami the t.af.'ic men
representing the railroads do not hesi
tate to declare th:it Hi budv male a
"botch" job of it. The decision is like
wise net altogether pleasing to the lum
ber Interests of the northwest
The railroads pruposed Increased rates
of approximately 10 cents per 100
pounqs on lumber from the producing
territories of tne northwest to the Mis
souri rivef and the territory to the east.

mission unlawfully undertook to pre
scribe and outline territories In which
lumber-producing districts may eell
their pnducts and to keep them out of
other prescribed terrlleries. Thla waa
