Wheat 16 8 20
On the Portland Board of Trade today
there was a disposition among the trade
to get some actual wheat and after
opening unchanged both September and
December wheat closed lc above Satur
day; the former at 84c bid. and the
latter at 85c bid.
A slightly weaker tone was noted In
oats and both options closed with a loss
of 2 He per cental from Saturday.
Barley marKet was anotner or tne
coarse grain list to show losing values
today. The loss was tne same as in
oats.
While the price of new wheat Is show
ing no disposition to weaken in fact,
the low mark has been wiped out buy
ers are using more caution In making
purchases. At country points millers
and exporters are paying n a basis of
4c for club and sec for Diuesiem.
Views of growers are getting nighty
and and for this reason buyers are
easlnir off In their operations.
Wuile no business in new riour is re
ported, makers are holding quotations
stiff around prices for old make.

Dr. J. 8. Courtney Is stll In Jail In
Indianapolis and furthermore no officer
or other authorized person has left
Portland to get rrtm.
An effort was made Saturday evening
to have the extradition papers for
warded to J W. Doyle, attending the
f;rand lodge of the Ancient Order of III
.ernlans, who It was thought would ac
company Dr. Courtney to Portland to
stand trial for manslaughter leading to
the death of Stella M. Bennett.
An objection was made by the district
attorney's office to allowing either Mr,
Doyle or P. K Sullivan, editor of the
Catholic Sentinel, and member of the
city executive board, who was also at
tending the grand lodge convention, to
act as custodian as Dr. Courtney was,
like them, a delegate to this convention.
By the t.me the district attorney's
office had heard of the plan of the de
fense lo have a friend of Dr. Courtney
come westward with him the extradi
tion papers had been made out with Mr.
Doyle named as custodian.
Today an effort was made to have E.
E. Montague authorized to go after Dr.
Courtney, but Deputy District Attorney
Fitzgerald would not permit It. Ho de
clares that nono other than a regularly
appointed officer shall go for Dr. Court
ney. In the mnlclnal court this afternoon
Iewls'Bowen Is being given a prelimi
nary hearing.

One of the objectionable cards named j

to anothor named card. "All I Got Was j

"Did You Ever Feel Like a Man Up a

Albany. Or. July 27. Reports have
reached the city that much of the clover
crop that nas Deen reserved for seed
has railed to nil witn seed and will not
make a ciop and is even now too ripe to
make good hay. The reason for this
condition is suid to he that the grower
has failed to comply with the custom
and requirements in t tie raising of
clover lor seed. It is said to he abso
lutely necessary to cut the crop early In
the season for hay and then allow It to
grow and develop again and allow the
new growth to develop into blossom
and see.. Those who ar facing this
dilemma now recognlxe their mistake
and admit the failure Is due to their
own fault In the failure to obey the
recognized principles in the raising of
clover. jt
