TRUST ON COAST
Federal Investigation Fails
to Ileveal Combine to
Fix Prices,
i
(There la no, lumber trust on the
Pacific coast, at least not In Oregon,
so far as government officials srrjployed
to ferret It out have discovered. After
months of Investigation they have come
upon "no evidence tending to Indicate
that any body of men or manufacturers
are banded together for the purpose
of malntalnlnK fixed prices on lumber.
Still the Investigation Is being pursued
In a quiet way.
An expression to this effect was
made yesterday by C. K. Kdgerton, spe
cial aent of the bureau of corporations,
who la here for the purpose of Investi
gating the supply or standing timber.
The deportment with which he Is con
nected, as tbe name Implies, was creat
ed by resolution passed by congress
for the purpose of orlnglng from cover
that body referred to as the lumber
trust. Hut the trust has not been dis
covered and now the greater port of
the force Is directing its ttohtlon to
securing data by which an Idea might
be gained as to the amount of stand
ing timber In the United Btntea.
Mr. Kdgerton says the southern states
have been thoroughly canvassed and for
the present 16 special agents are at
work on this coast. It Is a most diffi
cult and tedious undertaking, this gath
ering of timber statistics, and about
the only way to secure the informa
tion Is to get It from the holders of
lands.
Mr. Edgerton will remain here several
days and then go to Seattle to return
again In a few weeks to resume his
work.

FIRE ESCAPES FOR
HELPLESS HOUSES
stablai off the (round floor. X think
no. At least there are several stables
In Portland where horses are kept on
the second floors and where In case
of fire they would all be oorralled Ilka
rats In a trap
Why shouldn't fire escapes be put
In for horses? Why shouldn't man's
best friend be trained and taught to
use these escapes In case of fire?
I.lvery stable keepers naturally pre
fer to keep horses on the second floor
for various reasons. Usually the only
entrance or exit to this part of the
stables Is through the ground floor.
Here It Is that most of the livery
stable fires .rediscovered.
When such Is the case the horses
are shut off from all possibility of
escape, even though persons are able
to make sn effort to rescue them.
