Men's chamDionalnn MacBurney, of
Spokane-
Mlxfd doubles championship Miss
Jlotchklss and Mr. Jordan.
Men's consolation R. K. Black. ,
What was generally pronounced the
most successful tournament ever held
In Portland came to a close yesterday
afternoon with an Interesting match
between MacBurney rnd Tyler, of Spo
kane, for the men's championship, and
Miss Heitshu and Walter Goss against
Miss Hotchklss and H. Jordan for the
mixed doubles championship.
The largest crowd gathered during the
whole tourney was In attendance yes
tordav afternoon and the games were
followed with close attention and re'dy.
cntUuHlaKm. Interest centered fjener
pllv in the challenge game for the men's
championship, which was won Inst year
bv Tyler, of Spokane. Th contest whs
a hard-iougnt one mm mnnv tuiumni
plass were noted on both sides of the
net. When MacBurney, the challenger,
finally won the fourth set of the match
und was declared champion the applause
was long and continued. Ills brilliant
nerviee, agility in c overing grotin-1' and
his steady and cool play won him ins
victory. The game stood 4-b i:i favor
of Tyler, and 6-2, 6-3 and 6-0 In favor
of MacBurney. The latter has held the
citv championship in Spokane and Mac
liuiney the county championship. Last
par the two men played a wcli-fouaht
match in Taeoma, and Tyler defeated
j estei day's victor.
The other game of Interest was the
final In the mixed double. At no time
was the contest in doubt. . Miss Hotch
kiss' hrilliant work made her a match
for (toss, who was one of the most
i " vtactilar players seen throughout the
week. His (iiiick turns. his sudden
backhand stioke, and his ability to cover
space won him many plaudits. Miss
liejtshu. his partner, played a good
x;.me but was outclassed by the brll
liiint work of Miss Hotchklss. K. Jor
i 'in was Miss Hotchklss' mate but BhS
rather took the honors from him. The
fore in favor of Miss Hotchklss and
Mr. Jordan was 6-0 and 8-2.
Black Wins Consolation.
The other match of the afternoon was
t ne men consolation played by Tom
;. Farro.ll, who had triumphed In the
morning over S. S. Humphrey, and R.
K Black, who had won from L. B,
Humphrey. The match was a hard
fought one with every set a deuce set.
l:laok was the final winner with the
score 10-8, 8-6 and 7-6.
Before the prizes were awarded Miss
Hotchklss ana Mr. Jordan played an
exhibition match with the result 6-1
in favor of Miss Hotchklss and 4-4 In
favor of Mr. Jordan.
The morning's Interest centered about
the finals for the mon's doubles easily
won by Tyler and MacBurney ver
Remington and Jordan.
Dr. A. A. Morrison, who played early
In the tournament, was delegated to
present the trophies. He took occasion
to compliment the Irvlngton Tennis
club on the success of the tourney,
placing it high above any previous one
held In the city.. He said, the east
tide club had set a pace that the
Multnomah club with Its limited ac
commodations would find hard to equal
even with its larger membership, and
laid stress on the faot that the suc
cess was largely due to the hospitality
of the women and the courtesy of the
players.
Amid cheers the Orogon championship
cup, whir bears sucn names as Major
Walter A. Bethel. Joseph Tyler, Walter
doss, L. R. Freeman and other well
own coast players was presented to
r MacBurney. This was followed by
the Multnomah club challenge cup for
men's singles to Mr. MacBurney and he,
was called uDon for a speech In whloh
he hrlnflv rave his thanks for the hos
pitable treatment he had received, and
nralsod the management highly for the
tandard set In this tournament. The
second prize, a handsome scarf pin, was
awarded L. R. Freeman, who in answer
to a reouest for a speech said in behalf
of the California visitors that the treat
ment accorded them had been most roy-
al-and the entire tourney most delight
ful and well managed.
Caps for the Dooblee.
Two cups alike were given MacBurney
and Tyler for the doubles championship
and two smaller ones as second to Jor
dan and Remington, whom Dr. Morrison
christened the "greatest tennis mug
hunter of the continent." The chal
lenge cup presented by J. C. Alnsworth
for ladles' singles to be won three times
In succession was a handBome large
trophy and was awarded to Miss Hotcb.T
kiss, who, Dr, Morrison said, had set a
lively pace for following years. She
was given the tournament cup for the
ladles singles and Miss Heitshu the
second prize, a Jardlnler.
Cups were given Miss Hotchklss and
Miss Lessle Leadbetter for-the ladles'
doubles and Mrs. Walter Cook Rnd Miss
Btella Fording took the second prizes,
brass ferneries. First cups in mixed
doubles were awarded Miss Hotchklss
and Mr. Jordan, and a belt bucklo and
scarf pin as second to Miss Heitshu and
Mr. Goss. The consolation cup went to
R B. Black.
Mrs. .lav 8. Hamilton was the patron
ess for the day and served refreshments
with Miss I.oretia rTujiioinmc, Miss
Ethel Wentworth, Miss Catherine Wood
ward, and Miss Beasle Stewart assisting
her. Kveryone spoke highly of the man
agement details throughout the tour
nament and good feeling predominated
generally. '
Perfect fielding by the Beavers and
the Scattering of the 10 hits off Jesse
Onrrett gavo Portland her fourth
straight victory of the series and the
Jlttlo Texan his second within the
week. The score was 3 to 2 and the
result was In doubt at several stages
when a hit meant a tie or the game.
Dolly Gray, who did the gunning for
the southerners, was In great shape
when It came the hitting end, but
In mlserablo form on the free pass
proposition. Dolly allowed the locals
only a quintet of bing.es but he pre
sented them with eight bases on balls.
In addition he soaked Casey on the
antenna, un the other hand the Seraph
southpaw struck out eight of the hard-
nming Heaven.
There were features galore In the
fame, not the least of which were the
hreu catches of foul files by Kasterly,
who succeeded Hugun In tho fifth In
ning. All three were of the most diffi
cult character and the game little back
stop plunged Into a post supporting the
wire netting In nailing one from Dan
zig's bat. The cheers for Easterly were
deafening.
Selmas Stopa Hit.
Delmas cut off a hit for McCredle
in tho eighth when he stabbod a hot
liner that looked for all the world like
a safe drive. He, too, was vociferously
applauded. Mac nearly tore one of
Dolly Gray's mits off with a line drive
in the first Innlnp- and readied first,
getting credit for a blngle.
Star fieldlrig stunts on the Beavers'
side were less noticeable, although
McCredle and Bassey cut off hits by
their nifty catching.
Babe Danslg tore off a wallop In the
first Inning that reassured the fans
who have beun following the blK fellow
all spring and summer. With two on
bases he drove the ball Into right field
for three bags, the longest and most
spectacular sticking feat of the after
noon.
Jess Garrett was In extraordinary
luck throughout the entire game. The
visitors made hits In everv Inning but
two, the first and the seventh, yet
they failed to shove but two scores
over. In the fifth, sixth and eighth
can toes they came through with two
swats each but the sextet resulted in
but two scores.
How They Cam.
After retiring the enemy In one, two,
three order In the opening canto, the
Beavers started the run-getting bee.

Gan Francisco. July 18. O. Jones, the
rejuvenated, put the Oaks away with
comparative ease at Recreation park
this afternoon Just as he had dona In
the middle of the week. In the first
vsix innings not a clean-out blngle was
toiade off Oscar's offerings, which had
all kinds of smoke on them. The three
safeties credited to Van Haltern's crew
In the third were of the scratchy order.
In the last three rounds five nice hits
were punched out by the Oaks, but
clever support kept the tallying down.

$2,500
Challenges the Glidden Tour Winner for an
Endurance Run from New York to San Francisco
THE WHY We Iiavc been enthusiastic supporters of the Glidden
Tour. In the first one our $1,450 car tied the winner, a $3,000
car. In the second, a Maxwell won the Deming trophy. Again,
a Maxwell runabount was the only one of all pilot cars to complete ;
the tour. One identical Maxwell competed in every Glidden Tour
and is still running as good as ever. We competed in these tours
BECAUSE they gave a chance to show publicly that Maxwell
cars are superior in many ways to high-priced automobiles.;
INFLUENCED by a spirit of trade jealousy of the Maxwell and its
many triumphs over them, the Glidden Tour rules have been
so modified as to let the high-priced cars down easy if they lose.
HOW RIDICULOUS to expect us to enter a contest in which the
losing high-priced car can minimize or excuse defeat by point
ing to a schedule which made its rupning time thirty forty
five minutes faster a dav.
