KASIDE, Or., July 11. Hundred
now throne ths beaches And this
report has never had a luion
that offered a better outing; than
the present one. The weather
haa been Ideal and the man who chroni

had to carry a white flag around all
week. Reporta from the upper Necanl
cum aay that trout flatting haa never
been better. I. N. Flelachner of Port
land waa a aucceeaful fisherman laat
week and alao Kenneth Fenton of Port
land and Ted Hlgglna of Stanford.
There are any number of ahell fish
too, and not a cottage on the beach
but haa all It can use. ,
Now that the eeaaon la well started
the aoclai aide of affaire at the beach
la beginning to become more prominent.
There have been a number of Informal
gatherings during the week.
A Queer Craft.
Lily Cardiff la the name of tho only
foreign vessel that haa ever navigated
the peaceful waters of the Neoanlcum.
Although this little craft is only seven
feet long it haa visited all of the prin
cipal ports of the world. She was built
In Cardiff 6 pain and has been through
all kinds or seaa and weather from
the rough water of the German ocean
to the nellucld waves at the Red aea.
The Lily Cardiff haa passed through
the straight of Gibraltar, the fcfui't
canal and the Golden Gate. She In built
In the form of a tug boat and driven
by a propeller. Her length la seven
feet and her beam two feet. She carries
but one passnger who Is engineer, pilot
and captain. This man of many occu
pations sits In the hold of the vesiel
with his head coming higher than tho
ama.ll smokestack and sends the Lily
Cardiff spinning through the water by
working pedals with his feet. As tho
propeller turns she glides through the
water with all of tho grace and dignity
of a Cunard liner. The little craft Is
r;ulded by a regular pilot wheel wh'ch
s Just In front of the operator. She
Is fitted out with a compass nnd pre
pared to navigate In any bay or harbor
of the world. The Lily Cardiff w s
built by the sailors on the ship Galeoa
which was wrecked near Seaside somo
time back. She was In service fer soma
time and was used by the crew to
come from the Galena to shore In many
or the principal portH of the world
One man could pet In the llttlt tug and
quickly work his way to shore. Tho
craft Is at present the Dronertv of Mr
Will Taylor of the Necanlcum boat-
nouse. A large number of visitors at
the beach have been attracted by tin

there has
grown up iuite a little summer city.
Ovr 30 places of business front on It
and every few days adds another to
the list. Postcard stands, electric the
atres, restaurants, shooting gallerlos,
cand stores, a dancehall, a bowling
alley, a photographer, and a fortune
teller are among the enterprises which
will he reached by the new walk In
the short distance between the brldgo
and the ocean front. Almost every
person In Seaside has occasion to pass
down this street each day and the im
portance of the walk is realised. The
committee.. In charge of the work is:
A. H. Wilson, Harry Wheatley and G.
M. Grimes. D. C. Pelton of Portland
Is among those who are promoting the
project and almost every property
owner of West Seaside Is giving It his
hearty support.
Elk Wear Seaside.
During the past week reporta have
come to Seaside that there are a num
ber of elk in the hills beyond the re
sort. It has been told around town
that a whole herd of elk have been seen
on several occasions In the hills near
Seaside. While old hunters discredit
this reDOrt thev sav that there are soma
elk in the hills and most of them are
counting on getting one when the sea
son opens. Reports from those who
have been in the woods are also to the
effect that the black-tail coast deer are
plentiful, as are also the black bear.

Seaside, as we as being a beach resort,
offers opportunites to hunters and
manv take advantage of this. As soon
as the open season begins a number of
parties hunt big game with successful
results. There are hunters around the
resort who take parties out. It Is
scarcely over 12 miles from town to
where big game Is hunted.
Old-Fashioned riowera.
One of the novelties of Seaside is an
old-fashioned flower garden of L. Ia
mann of Necanlcum Inn. Mrs. Damann
hns devoted a half-acre tract back of
her cottaKO to the culture of flowers and
esoeclallv to the old-fashioned varie
ties which have been greatly neglected
Dy gardeners 01 late years. in mis
small souce the Industrious little wo
man has some 60 different kinds of
flowers, most of which are of the old
fashioned species. Iahllas. verbenas,
fox glove sweet William and daisies
flourish . in the sunshines and the salt
air adds color to their blooms. There
la honeysuckle, forget-me-nots and pan
sles In any quantity and popples of
every variety, for poppies are Mrs. Da
mann s special favorite. The collec
tion In the garden has been growing In
size from veur to' year and every sum
mer finds the diligent gardener with a
larger number of her old-fashioned fa-
rvorttes Some of the flowers grow
quite well In the sandy soil, but for
other species ft lias been found neces
sary to bring In heavier earth. Mrs.
Damann works In her garden a number
of hours every day and will seldom
trust any one with the care of her flow
ers. During the summer tho display of
flowers attracts the attention of many
visitors at Seaside and those who like
the old-fashioned varieties find Mrs.
Damann always ready to show them
through her garden.

North Beach, Wash., July IT. Ths
week past has seen a steady Increase In
the population of the entire beach.
While the traffic at the hotels is not
quite as great as It was last week
more cottages have been opened. Ths
mall line at the Long Beaoh postofflce
has extended out on tho" sidewalk for
the first time this season, which Indl-
cates the increase In the cottage ar
rivals. Those at the different resorts,
along the beach are enjoying themselves
In every possible way and not a min
ute of vacation time Is allowed to pass
without something to make It worth
while. Charles Arthur has two largo
automobiles on the beach and parties
are being taken to the wrecks and other
points of Interest. There Is horseback
riding, fishing, swimming and dancing.
Bonfires Illuminate the beach from one
end to the other. Moving picture
theatres entertain crowds. Fortune tel
lers have opened their booths and Pro
fessor Griffith, the . phrenologist, ex
plains to the beach visitors the great
iiosslbllitles In the bumps on their
heads.
Guests, neighbors and visitors of ths
Driftwood cottage enjoyed themselves -Thursday
night at a quilting party given
by. the clever little hostess of the cot
tage. Mr. Hutchinson of the Salt Air hotel
gave a dinner party during the week
for his friends.
Sunset cottage had a bonfire Wednes
day night.
Swimming at Iiong Beaoh.
The Crystal Baths hove opened at
Lonsr Beach and the big Dlunee is verv
popular. Swimming In the surf Is im
possible except to experts and even
when indulged In by them it Is accom
panied with danger. On account of this
a great many persons who enjoy gwim-.
ming go io me niunge every aay. xne
fact that the chill has been taken from
the water and am average temperature
of 75 dere"H maintained makes the
bathing especially enjoyable. The big
tank Is filled every day with a fresh
supply of salt water. While a number
of expert swimmers and divers spend a
part of each day following the sport
there are also many beginners visit the
plunge, where they learn to swim.
Frank Canarls, one of the fathers of
Long Beach, Is the owner of the place
and Is around the office, where ho
greets his many old friends.
