Big American Weight Men

Take Back Scat,
(United frees Leaewl Wfrt.)
London, July 18. Carrying off gold,
liver and bronae medals for flrt, seo
ond nd third places In the discus throw
and breaking ha Olympic record, Araer
Ion ethlataa toriuv made rauld advance
ment toward first place in the general
results at the Olvmulo same. Al
though England holds four gold medals
ana America ou inrce, mo rawni
says the Hrltons were victors In events
In which the athletes from the United
state had not counted upon taking first
places. ,
English athletes are showing good
form and have the advantage of being
ore home soli, but results of oontests
thus far indicate that the Americans
will make-a hard fight to repeat their
performance of former Ulympic gomes
and carry off first place In a large ma
jority of the events. Members of the
American teams have avoided whenever
possible entering the events scheduled
lor the first few days of the meet
They have been sparring for all the time
possible In which to become accusiomea
tn th rrllmntiu conditions here.
Great Britain's wonderful showing
yesterday, when it captured the gold
medals In the 660-yard cycling race and
the thrAfl-mile rare has heartened the
home athletes and they entered the field
today with new determination 10 win
first to wrest the laurels from the Amer
leans.
Americans Oo Wild.
When Martin Sheridan of New York
hurled the discus 134 feet, 2 Inches to
day, winning the finals, the American
ctlon In the field went wild with Joy,
At Athens two years ago Sheridan
threw the discus 1S6 feet one- third
Inch.. As predicted before the games
commenced, America maae a eieuu
sweep. Griffin taking second place and
M V. Horr of New York taking third.
Finland hnd counted upon making a
showing in this went, but England ex-
pfcted to take a obck srni.
In the preliminaries for the discus

the first and second sections' combines
with a mnrk of 122 feet inches. The
third section was won by A. K. Pear
born of New York, who scored 126 feet

PRACTICAL JQKER FLOODS FRISCO ,
WITH FAKE BIDS TO BAT'S'DINNER
(United Pre tossed Wire.)
San Franclsoo. July 18. Battling
Nelson la on the warpath today and If
he finds the practical Joker who flooded
the town with tyg-u Invitations to his
birthday dinner party last night a
tragedy may result.
When the battler saw the guests
assembled at the Fsirmont last night,
to celebate the pane's acquisition of
the belt, Nelson was pelted with a pile
of letters a foot high. The envelopes,
he discovered, contained regrets and
aooeptancea.
All of his guests were present and
the battler was puzzled, lie did not
know the men whose signatures wore
affixed to the notes and his astonish
ment was complete when It was an
nounced that several guests were tn
the hotel awaiting admittance to the
dining-room.
Investigation today showed that some
f radical Joker had issued several hun
red spurious "bids" to the battler's
party. The Invltatlops were sent to
the most prominent clubmen In &iin
Ji'ranclsco and were accompanied by a
note apologizing lor the lateness of
their arrival.

RAILWAY MAGNATES WON'T RUN
EXCURSIONS AND FIGHT IS IN AIR
f fulled Press Leased Wire.)
Ban Francisco, July 16. Refusal of
of railway magnates to agree to run
excursions to Ely on Labor Day, It Is
believed today, will probably result in
the cancelling of the Oans-Nelson fia-ht.
If that contest Is declared off Packy
McFarland hopes to arrange a battle
with Nelson to be fought here Septem
ber 9.
.Another reason that the Oans-Nel-
sOn fight may not be pulled off at Kly
Is that a rival bout la being plannod
for Ooldfleld on the same date. Tex
Rlckard has not been r heard from of
ficially.
Harry Gilmore Jr., McFarland's man
ager. expresses the belief that his scran
per will have no difficulty In taking
trie tattler s scalp. He declares iselson
was no better when he won tha belt
from Gans than he was when Brltt
defeated him. He says Gans was worn
out. .
Fight fans, while admitting that Mc
Farland Is a wonder, are not inclined
to take the same rostjate view of lux
chance of a walkover In a fight with
the Dane that his manager does. It is
generally conceded, however, that Mc
Farland would give Nelson a run and
that the contest would be one of the
best ever pulled off here.

ENGLAND SURPRISED
BECAUSE MEL IS OUT
(United Press Leased Wire.)
London. Julv 16- Great surprise was
expressed when it was learned here to
day that Melvtn W. Sheppard, winner
of the 1.600 meter race in the Olympic
games, was recently removed from the
New York police force on the grounds
of physical disability.
Although Sheppard proved tha fastest
of the world's foremost runners here,
the American city's police commission
decided he was not strong enough to
wear the blue uniform of a New York
officer. The Fiirpreons who examined
him declared he had enlargement of the
heart and hardening of the arteries. It
Is reported that his case will be reopened
upon his return to America, and that It
is probable he will be put back on the
force. Mis friends say he was removed
st his own request.

My, how tnose Beavers gobbled up
the menu presented by "Hash" Hosp.
They ordered and were served with
triples, double und single and out of
tne soiree came seven runs, ah tnat
the southerners could do waa to put
one over, an earned run In the eighth
on a two-bagger by Hosp and a single
by Wheeler.
Both slabsters started out like quar
ter horses, retiring the first nine men
up on elluer side, and allowing but one
hit eacli. In the fourth Bernard stung
one of Garrett s shoots for a double,
but died on tnlrd.
This served to set the locals on edge.
Ryan put the scoring machine In mo
tion dv a single ann i om rtarierv im
mediately followed with a corking two
bapger luto center field which came near
being a triple. However, Tom never
slopped until he reached the third sta
tion, making the bag on the throw In
to head Ryan at the plate. Then Ote
Johnson the real sticker of the day,
slammed the sphere for one. base, scor
ing Raff.
Johnson Iiani Heavily.
One more scorelet was hung up In
the sixth. Johnson leaned heavily on
the sphere, sending it way out Into
center field. The ball whizzed past
Oakes nnd continued merrily on Its
way. Rebel gtve persistent pursuit.
but before he overhauled the object of
ns qufst Jonnson had turned second
and was beating it to third. A swift
return kept tho Viking on the corner.
McCredlos single scored Johnson alter
Danzig flld out to Brashenr.
roiir more runs were made In tne
seventh before tho visitors .hud retired
soul on the Portland sciuad. Casey
cleverly worked "Hash" for a pass and
Hvnn got In the way of a pitched bull.
Then Hosp foozled Raftery's sacrifice
nnd tli sacks were bulging with Beav
ers. Johnson came along with another
single that tallied Pearl and Buddy.
Danzig's second bingle pushed Baftery
to the plnte and Johnson registered on
Easterly's error, the Angel catcher drop
ping an almost perfect throw from Del-mas.
A fast double spoiled the chances for
ringing un again when Bassev drove the
hall into Delmas' hands and Del whipped
it to bmitn, completing a pretty play.
There were throe other fast doubles
pulled off during the matlnoe, Smith
and Wheeler officiating In the other one
for tho Sernphs and Cnsev, Johnson and
Danzig pulling off Portland's brace.
ltie lone pine for the southerners
grew in the eighth. Hosn first un.
battered the horsehide for two bases.
Bernard and Oakes were out respec-
Ivelv on a tlv to Rnfterv And a firnnnd-
er to Danzig and then Wheeler copped
his first single. Hosp went over.
Counting the 13 Innlnes he Ditched
he other day. Garrett hung up the reo- ,
rd for tho Portland team of pitching ,'
he most shutout Innings of the season, i
t a run was scored off the little
ellow for 20 innings before Hosp put;
