Itself & are the waving fields of wheat
and other grains. r
Potatoes and melon are everywhere
In evidence and much attention la given
to garden truck of every variety known
to the temperate eone.
In one of the pictures with this article
a view Is afforded of a half acre patch
given, ovor to tomatoes on the farm
of J. C. Hostetter near The Dalle.
Last year this patch produced for Its
owner $866.46 net. There are other In
stances of big yields In many tines and
the records of them are .In the hands
of The Dalles BusiriVss Men's associa
tion, which Is always glad to supply
lliein on application.
XTew Tracts Opcaed.
During the last year three new tractj
have been opened to settlement near
The Dalles and land can be purchased
for 'farm or orchard purposes at from
$50 to $200 per acre, according to lo
cation and Improvements, and in parcels
varying from 5 to 20 acres, in addition
the Dufur district, 15 miles away. Is
forging to the front as an apple and
pear section in which chances to buy
land at reasonable figures still exists.
Some Idea of the proportions to which
the rnlt Industry has advanced at The
Dalles may be had from the fact that
outside of those sent out by. boat and
the country is fully
era of road Improvement strikes In
the large quantity sold directly to the
local cannery. In the neighborhood of
100 carloads were shipped last year by
rail. - -
The drive through The Dalles suburbs
Is one of the .mot fascinating In the
state as the country la rolling and the
scenery on that account aubleot to fre
quent change. Kor soma distance the
road to the south winds gradually up
the sides of the bluff which overlooks
the town," affording a plendid view, of
the Columbia river and the Cascade
range In all directions. From portions
hit It Mount Adams Is plainly visible
and the orchards and cultivated fields
clinging to the hillsides make up a
series of .pictures not soon to be for-cotlen.
At present these roads are In fairly
good condition, but bye and bye, when
ceveiopea ana me
tne
thoroughfares about the cherry city
will prove its most attractive feature
and will render the neighborhood one
of the most delightful for driving pur
poses to be found anywhere.
Tutnre mil, of Promise.
Tho future Is full' of promise for The
Dalles as it Is for ail the Columbia
river towns with large agricultural sec
tions surrounding tifnm. i ne ireeaoin
of transportation which It 1s soon to j
possess through the opening or the
Celllo canal and the establishment of
additional boat lines which must fol
low, while it Is the most Important of
the Improvements to which the town Is
looking forward, la not the only one.
The era of reconstruction, of tearing
down and rebuilding. Is already In sight
and among the new undertakings prom
ised in this line Is an up to date rail
road station for the Oregon Railroad
& Navigation company and a new hotel
uu i ii in mo wpbi run ui iitw 11 mu.uuii-
venlent to its business section. Activity
In residence construction Is already
unaer way.
The city Is also looking forward to
an increase In population and Import
ance through the opening of the North
Bank road which will bring It Into con
nection with three great railway sys
tems to the east, namely, the Northern
Pacific, the Great Northern and the
Burlington routes. These open to It
competitive markets and also afford
chance to contend for a share of the
great immigration which those lines arc
constantly bringing Into the northwest.
After all said and done, however, the
out-of-door spirit referred to In the
earlier portion of this article and the
disposition to Improve the soil back of
tne town, together wltn the movement
to open the large landholdlngs and
sell them off In small tracts for cultl
vation, Is the first and best hope of
The Dalles and will if persisted in for
very few years render the neighbor
hood one of the most delightful resi
dence districts In Oregon.
INDIAN WANTS WHITE
MAN TO KEEP OFF
(Special DtntMtch to The Jonrnal.)
Pendleton. Or.. July 16. Suit has
ust been filed by Marion Jack against
E. McFatrldee. United States Indian
agent, and Roy V. Perrlnger. The court
Is asked to issue an order restraining
Perrlnger from harvesting the crop on
160 acres of land, and the injunction
has been granted.
Back of this complaint lies an Inter
esting story. The government places 840
acres as the limit of Indian land which
may be leased by one party.
Commissioner Leupp and Secre
tary Garfield, who have Just been here
upheld Agent McFatrldge in the work
of striving to enforce the government's
rule. Jack sets forth In his complaint
that he legally leased 160 acres or land
on the reservation, paying $3 an acre.
He says that he was notified through
Agent McFatrldge that Perrlnger could
go on the land for the purpose of har
vesting the crop. Perrlnger is said to
have enlisted the support of President
Penrose of Whitman college. Walla
Walla, a classmate of Garfield, who Im
portuned the secretary to direct that
the land be given Perrlnger.
