The ateam schooners Northland, flho
hom and Homer and the oil tank
steamer Colonel E. Drake reached the
harbor last night and this morning, all
of them brlnalna- more or less car so.
The Northland came In full from Ban EXCELLENT TABLE.
i-mmiouu, me rreignt consisting 01
general merchandise gunnies, paints
and hardware. Bhe also Drought a fu'l
llHt of passengers. Six of mem were
left behind on the dock when the craft
f lulled out from Astoria last night, but
hey were discovered and Captain Erlck
son put back for them.
Second Officer Bostrom of the North
land says the sea Is full of monster
sharks In the vicinity or the Columbia
river. Dozens of them were seen from
the deck of the Northland yesterday
and they were chasing schools of aal
mon. There were many whales, too. but
they attracted less attention because
there are always a number of them
sighted on a voyage along the coast.
Sharks, on the contrary, are seldom
seen In this latitude, declares Officer
Bostrom.
"1 have seen many sharks In my
days," said Bostrom, "but those we ran
close to off the river yesterday beat
anything. One of them was fully 26
feet long and had a head at least four
feet wide across the top. 1 would have
hated to fallen overboard about that
time. I suppose they have come north
to feed on the salmon entering tho
river, but It seems they have missed
thWr latitude."
The Northland is discharging freight
at Couch street dock today, but will
probably shift to Oceanic dock tomor
row to load wheat for a return cargo.
The Homer reached Couch street dock
at 10 o'clock this morning about 15
hours late from San Francisco via Coos
bay because of dense fogs along the
coast. ' Captain Dorrls reports having
been detained half u day at Coos bay
by fog. He put In there to pick up
some passengers. The craft brought 110
tons ot freight and will leave tomor
row for San Pedro via San Francisco
tomorrow night with wheat and pas
sengers.
e steam schooner Shoshone, Cap
tain Anderson, is at AInsworth dock
ding general cargo for San Fran
cisco for the San Francisco & Port
land Steamship company. She will take
a full cargo or about 900 tons, which
will help a great deal to relieve the
freight congestion.
