RACE WHITNEY DEAD

Was Weil-Known Dramatic
Critic and Husband of
Rosemary Whitney.
Race Whitney, one of the best known
newspaper, men on tne racino coajji,
died at Salt Lake City this morning.
He was dramatic editor of The Journal
for more than" a year, leaving Portland
in 1906. His wife. Rosemary Gloa
Whitney, is an operatic and concert
singer of high reputation, who has many
friends in this city.
Mr. Whitney, a most versatile writer
n m.ir.r well as dramatic criti
cisms, handled many of the features of
tha Lewis and Clark exposition during
the summer of 1906, and made friends
wherever he went.
There have been lew critics on tne
Paolflo ooast who have had such Inti
mate knowledge of the drama and stage
ut mm Rir Whitnev. The author of
several musical comedies, his criticisms
were regarded an coming from an au
thority even by those he criticised.
Mr. Whitney had been ill in Los An
geles for severnl months, and he Anally
returned to Salt Lake City, his former
home, in the hope of bettering nis
health. Word reached Fortlana mi

curred there early today. Hl$ age was
about 85 years.

Mothers' Congress Lays Case
Before Directors, Giving
Many Instances.
In a report which conforms largely
with one prepared by Dr. Esther C.
Pohl. city health officer, the Oregon
State Congress of Mothers laid before
tho memoers of the school board the
necessity of Improving the sanitary
conditions of the public schools at yes
terday's board meeting.
Members of the mothers' congress
based their report upon conditions
found while visiting the schools in the
winter months. The report pays par
tloular attention to the unsanitary con
dition existing at Fulton Park school.

Falling and Shattuck, and recommends
Immediate steps to remedy the evils
which are endangering the health of
the pupils In the various institutions.

Multnomah Clubmen Will
Make Merry on River Trip
Up Columbia.
What will be the banner low jinks of
the Multnomah Amateur Athletic club
will be held next Bunday at the mouth
of the Lewla river, the palatial river
steamer J. N. Teal being utilised to
transport the merrymakers down the
Willamette and down the Columbia to
the camping grounds.
Every summer the club holds Its low
jinks, but this year the festivities will
far surpass any other effort of the or
ganisation. It Is expected that several
hundred members will laave on the
steamer next Sunday morning at 8:30
o'clock, the starting point being from
the Oak street dock.
There will be all kinds of athletlo
events, as the following program will
show:
One bull fight, two brass bands, four
baseball games, 10 athletic events, one
tu k of war, five sack races, two glee
elus -10 swimming races, four boxing
matches.
Refreshments will be served on the
steamer both going and oomlng, and a
royal time is assured every one of the
members who goes with the party.

lighthouse, some 12 miles below the

Peonla who attended the first night
of tho Allen Curtis Comedy company at
the Airdome last night spent a night In
Venice and had a very good time, it
is true that they laughed a good deal
more than if they had really oeen
over In the city of, canals, and saw
more pretty dancing girls, and heard
moro tuneful song, but that did not
detract any from the enjoyment of the
occasion In fact, the people seemed

that was given the players as number

"A Night In Venice'' tells of ths
superstition of an aged Hebrew and of

son. Ths comedy is set In Venice and
has all sorts of amusing situations.
The Alien Curtis oompany has estab

furnish all kinds of amusement, and
during this week It will live up to Its

company, both the soloists and the
chorus in the musical numbers. Miss
La Ponte, Miss Oreen. Albert Leonard
and the quartette, composed of Clam-
age, Llndley, Figg and Leonard, all
made hits with their solo work, while
the work of the chorus In support was
met with hearty applause and continued
encores. The play Is In one act, which
adds much to the enjoyment of the au
dience as the long intermissions which
have been given heretofore have been
eliminated. "A Night In Venice" will
be presented each evening during the
